Sign Up to Receive Alerts

RSS is a web-based news feed that allows content exported from one source and delivered multiple locations. RSS feeds display in a web browser, on other websites, or in email like Outlook. The following instructions will show you how to subscribe to receive safety alerts directly from CIEE.

Outlook contains a built in RSS reader that allows you to receive alerts just like an email.

  • In the main Mail navigation panel to the left in Outlook, you will find a ‘RSS Feeds’ or ‘RSS Subscriptions’ folder (expand all menu’s/folders if you do not see either).
  • Right click the RSS folder and select “Add a New RSS Feed…”
  • Enter the following URL into the popup window, https://www.ciee.org/rss/alerts.xml, and click ‘Add’.
  • Approve the next message and any active alerts will begin to flow into this Outlook folder, which should automatically be titled “CIEE Alerts”.


To remove the CIEE Alerts Feed and keep downloaded content:'

  • Click the File tab.
  • Click Account Settings, and then click Account Settings.
  • On the RSS Feeds tab, under Feed Name, click the RSS Feed, and then click Remove.


To forward RSS alerts from your Outlook account to a personal email address:

  • Subscribe to the CIEE Alerts feed following the steps above.
  • Click 'File' in the Outlook toolbar and select "Rules and Alerts".
  • Click "New Rule..."
  • Click to highlight "Apply rule on messages | receive" then click "Next >".
  • Check "from RSS Feeds with specified text in the title".
  • Click the 'specified text' link in the Step 2 section and select "CIEE Alerts". Click "Next >".
  • Check off "forward it to people or public group".
  • Click the 'people or public group' link in the Step 2 section and enter your other email address.
  • Click Finish.
  • Check off 'Enable rules on all messages downloaded from RSS Feeds'.
  • Click "OK".

Unlike Outlook, most email services do not provide built-in RSS support. However, there are many free website which can send you an email every time a new item is added to an RSS feed. You use any website you like, but here is a free one. Note, blogtrottr.com does include ads in the emails you receive.

  • Click the link to visit Blogtrottr.
  • In the first field, delete 'http://' already filled in, then copy and paste this URL into that field: https://www.ciee.org/rss/alerts.xml
  • Enter your email address in the second field.
  • Leave the third field set to 'Realtime'
  • Click the 'Feed me' button
  • Look for a confirmation email from Blogtrottr, and click the link to receive RSS alerts.

We recommend using a Firefox add-on to read RSS feeds. One option is Freebro Reader.

  • Click the link and select Add to Firefox. A new radio tower icon will appear on your browser.
  • Click the icon and select Open Feed Reader. Then click Add a new feed in the middle of that page.
  • Paste this URL https://www.ciee.org/rss/alerts.xml in the Feed URL box and put CIEE Alerts in the Title field and click Save.
  • Now clicking the radio tower icon will always display CIEE’s active safety alerts. You will need to click each current alert to mark it as “read”. Once read, you can go back to review alerts by clicking All Items on the left.
  • NEW ALERTS: When CIEE publishes a new alert, you will see a blue number on the radio tower icon to let you know of the new alert.

Unlike Firefox, Chrome does not have a built-in RSS reader, however, there are many free add-on’s available in the Chrome Web Store. You can select any that you like, but here is one we recommend.

  • Click Slick RSS and click the blue ‘+ Add to Chrome’ button and Add Extension to install.
  • Click the new radio tower icon in the top of your browser, followed by the ‘Add Feeds’ button on the left.
  • Enter “CIEE Alerts” in the name field and this URL, https://www.ciee.org/rss/alerts.xml, in the URL field.
  • Click ‘Add’, then ‘Save’ to complete the process.
  • Now clicking the radio tower icon will always display CIEE’s active safety alerts. You will need to click the X on each current alert to mark it as “read.”
  • NEW ALERTS: When CIEE publishes a new alert, you will see a blue number on the radio tower icon to let you know of the new alert.

There are multiple RSS apps in the Google Play Store. One option is gReader.

  • Using the link above, click the green install button to install gReader on your phone.
  • Once installed, open the app and click the plus (+) sign in the upper right.
  • Copy and paste this URL https://www.ciee.org/rss/alerts.xml in the ‘keywords or Url’ and click ‘Search’.
  • Click the orange plus symbol to start receiving alerts.

There are multiple RSS apps in the App Store. One option is feeder.co.

  • Using the link above, download and install the feeder.co app.
  • Create an account with email address.
  • When prompted select ‘Allow Push Notifications’.
  • In the bottom corner select 'Edit' followed by the '+ Feed' button.
  • Enter the following URL on the URL line, www.ciee.org/rss/alerts.xml.
  • Select 'Add Feed'.
  • In the Results at the bottom of the screen, turn on the CIEE Alerts feed.

Websites can display RSS feeds automatically whenever a new alert is distributed. Different content management systems (CMS) have different methods of integrating RSS feeds. As such, we would recommend that the institution provide this material to their web team for assistance on including the CIEE RSS feed into an area of their website.
