Our Priority 24/7
Rest assured, health and safety are our number-one priority — for every participant, on every one of our CIEE Gap Year Abroad programs. Dedicated program staff, 24/7 CIEE and in-country emergency support, and comprehensive travel insurance give participants — and parents — peace of mind during the study abroad experience.
CIEE’s approach to health and safety is fourfold. First, CIEE conducts a careful safety evaluation of every program it runs. Next, we provide comprehensive and realistic information to prospective applicants, so that they can make the most informed decisions about whether or not a program is right for them. Then, participants receive a thorough pre-departure orientation that includes tips on reducing risk and handling difficult situations, should they arise. While in-country, we offer gap year abroad participants, support through a network of CIEE Study Center staff and host families. Additionally, our staff at the CIEE office in Portland, Maine, is on call 24/7 to provide emergency support and resolve any issues that may arise.
The safety and security of our students and staff is our first priority. CIEE has a robust active emergency and communication plan that includes evacuation assistance and security intelligence services that provide us with frequent updates. We are part of the Overseas Security Advisory Council, a division of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security in the U.S. Department of State, and we coordinate with a consortium of security professionals that works with more than 40 other colleges and institutions throughout the United States.
