Open a Bank Account

CIEE recommends that you open a checking account at a local bank. When you open your account, ask about student discounts, such as no minimum balances and no ATM fees.

The documents typically needed to open a bank account are:

  • Passport and J-1 Visa
  • DS-2019 Form
  • I-94 Card
  • Proof of Social Security Application
  • A letter from your employer confirming employment may also be required

Once you have opened a bank account, speak to your host organization about Direct Deposit, having your paycheck automatically deposited into your account.
