Education Background Requirements: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemical Engineering, BioEngineering, Biotechnology, Mechanical Engineering (automation, robotics, data science, system analysis)

    Internship Duration: 6-12 month position
    About us: https://www.jbei.org/

    What we aim to achieve:
A limiting key step in the biological conversion of biomass to biofuels and bioproducts is the efficient deconstruction and separation of targeted intermediates derived from the polysaccharides and lignin initially present. The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) has established world-class and differentiated expertise in the use of aprotic and protic ionic liquids (ILs), deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and alkanolamines as biomass pretreatment solvents that represent a potential game-changing deconstruction technology, but there remain several significant scientific challenges that must be addressed before an affordable IL-based process is commercially viable.

What we hope you can learn and contribute to:
To address these challenges, we will discover and demonstrate solvents that are compatible with, or even improve the performance of, downstream enzymes and organisms, which in turn will enable process consolidation and intensification to minimize capital and operating expenses and increase yields. Interns will help screen different solvents for biomass deconstruction, assist in the operation of JBEI’s feedstocks to fuels pipeline, and use enzymes to liberate fermentable sugars.

    About the Role

    About the Role
As a Research Engineer Intern at Orbifold AI, you will be at the forefront of advancing multimodal AI models and infrastructure. Your primary focus will be on developing state-of-the-art (SOTA) visual models, optimizing AI-driven data pipelines, and transforming large-scale, multimodal datasets into high-quality training inputs.

We are looking for engineers who are passionate about multimodal AI, large-scale model optimization, and data-centric AI research. You will work with Mixture of Experts (MoE) models, distributed systems, and batch inference at an internet scale—pushing the boundaries of training, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and reinforcement learning for enterprise AI applications.

    Key Responsibilities
Develop and optimize multimodal AI models, focusing on computer vision, natural language processing (NLP), and generative architectures.

Design and maintain high-throughput data pipelines to process and curate large-scale multimodal datasets (e.g., images, text, video, structured data).

Implement and refine MoE models to enhance model efficiency and scalability for multimodal AI training.

Integrate the latest research innovations into our multimodal AI platform, improving data accuracy, diversity, and relevance.

Experiment with SOTA models and data curation techniques to maximize AI training efficiency and quality.

Collaborate with research scientists and machine learning engineers to improve data and AI infrastructure, ensuring scalability as models evolve.

    Preferred Qualifications
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, or a related field.

Proficiency in Python and experience working with large-scale open-source datasets like DataComp.

Strong understanding of distributed computing, high-performance computing (HPC), and cloud-based AI infrastructure.

Hands-on experience with multimodal model training, especially in computer vision, video understanding, and NLP.

Familiarity with deep learning frameworks and multimodal model architectures.

Passion for large-scale visual model research, with the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
