The inaugural cohort of students selected for the Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship has arrived in Copenhagen to begin an immersive internship experience centered on environmental sustainability and intercultural learning. During the program, students will train and learn alongside leading Danish organizations dedicated to advancing sustainable practices and global collaboration.

Connect with CIEE on LinkedIn to follow the students’ journey throughout the summer and learn more about the partnership between Scan Design Foundation and CIEE.

About the Program

Co-sponsored by CIEE and Scan Design Foundation, the Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship was awarded to eight outstanding students who demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, a passion for cross-cultural learning, and a desire to contribute innovative solutions to global environmental challenges.

Throughout the program, participants will intern with Copenhagen-based host organizations whose environmentally sustainable business practices align with the students’ academic backgrounds, skills, and career aspirations.

Meet the inaugural cohort of students and their host organizations for the summer:

  • Louisiana State University, Alexis Kelley, Environmental Engineering – Host Organization: Aerial Tools
  • North Carolina A&T University, Misbahou Jalloh, Physics – Host Organization: Home.Earth
  • University of California, Berkeley, Cornelius Van Zutphen, Business Administration – Host Organization: BLOXHUB
  • University of Colorado Boulder, Olivia Gaik, Biochemistry – Host Organization: Octarine Bio
  • University of Texas at Austin, Lara Figur Valente Borges, Environmental Science – Host Organization: Coffee Collective
  • University of Washington, Eva Odderson, Engineering – Host Organization: Ambient Carbon
  • Villanova University, Srija Tamidela, Finance – Host OrganizationCoffee Collective

In addition to their internships, students will complete a six-credit internship seminar, participate in networking events, and attend professional development workshops while immersing themselves in Danish culture, daily life, and activities that promote sustainability such as attending The Unwasted Festival, a community-driven upcycling event hosted by Fashion Revolution Denmark, and volunteering at a “free-cycling” center — a community space where individuals can donate unneeded items and exchange them for others, keeping usable goods out of landfills.

By the end of the experience, the students will have developed a global network of professional contacts and gained the knowledge and skills needed to pursue innovative, sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Follow along with the Fellows’ transformative experience through their reflections that we will post on the CIEE College Study Abroad blog and on LinkedIn.
