Savor the first bite of traditional paella while dining with your homestay. Read “Don Quixote” in the language of Miguel de Cervantes during literature class at the local high school. Practice your Spanish while getting to know your peers in the host community.
Spain offers the perfect setting to study abroad in high school. Rigorous classes, complete Spanish language immersion, and firsthand access to a new and different culture will help you gain the personal, academic, and professional skills needed to be successful in college and beyond.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Spain.
Orientation
Upon arriving in Spain with your fellow participants, you will be met by CIEE staff in Seville, where you will begin your three-day orientation. During orientation, you will participate in different workshops focusing on a variety of themes — culture, language, academics, social norms, current events — all designed to best prepare you for your experience in Spain. Additionally, you’ll see some of the best that Seville has to offer!
After orientation, you will depart for your host community and spend a couple of days with your homestay before starting school.

Wherever you’re placed and wherever you go, every experience is designed to give you an insider’s look into multifaceted Spanish culture and life. What can you do for fun? Attend local festivals, visit sights of cultural and historical importance, and take daytrips to places like Seville, Granada, Bilbao, or Madrid with your homestay. You’ll have a whole year or semester to discover the country — on your own, with new CIEE friends, and with your homestay.
Tuition for this program includes the cost of one day trip and one overnight trip per semester. Trips will take place earlier in the semester to allow trimester students the opportunity to participate. These trips vary every semester and may also be adjusted to mitigate COVID-19 risks, but some examples of past excursions have included:
For Fall
Cádiz/Bolonia (Day Trip)
Cádiz is the oldest city in Western Europe, often referred to as the "Silver Cup" for its magical sunlight. The various historical and cultural influences make you feel like you’re walking through time. After a day of touring the narrow, winding streets of the city’s historic center, enjoy laying out on some of the most beautiful beaches in Southern Spain.
Historically used as a fishing village and trade link, Bolonia is a spectacular town with one of the best beaches in South Spain. The contrast of the green mountains, the sea, Roman ruins, and the white sand make it a unique and memorable place to visit.
Cordoba (Day Trip)
Few places in the world can boast of having been the capital of a Roman province, the capital of an Arab State, and a Caliphate. The historic quarter of Córdoba is a beautiful network of small streets, alleys, squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the Mezquita, which reflects the city's prominent place in the Islamic world during medieval times.
For Spring
Aracena, Huelva
Aracena is a town from Huelva, AndalucÃa known from its mountain range, amazing cure ham and Gruta de las Maravillas, one of the best-preserved grottos in the world. Explore its underground maze of galleries, lakes and watercourses shaped by time and water. Back to the surface, learn the history of the village on a guided tour, and enjoy free time to wander around this typical white village.
Malaga/Ronda (Overnight Trip)
Embark on an adventure to the Costa del Sol region of Spain, where you will have the chance to visit the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and the beautiful beaches of Málaga. You’ll also get the chance to escape to the countryside to admire the stunning vistas and winding streets of Ronda.
Please note this list of activities is based on past programs and subject to change at CIEE's discretion to both adapt to local circumstances and participant feedback. For Fall 2021, local health and safety guidelines may not allow for overnight excursions or day trips. Participants will be updated as the program start date comes closer.

Eligibility
- Be at least 15 years old by the start of the program and they cannot have their 18th birthday while on program
- Must not have met graduation requirements before program begins
- Have 2 years of Spanish or equivalent
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
Application Fee
$50
Priority deadline discount: Apply to a fall semester or academic year by February 15 and get a $400 discount. Apply to a spring semester by July 15 and get a $400 discount. Discounts are deducted from final balance.
Program fee includes international airfare and iNext travel insurance. Full inclusions are found online
