Energetic, romantic, dynamic, historic — Spain offers a world of experiences you’ll never forget.

The story of Spain has been written by its many people, from Iberians and Celts to Romans and Moors. Write your own story with CIEE High School Abroad in Spain.

Savor the first bite of traditional paella while dining with your homestay. Read “Don Quixote” in the language of Miguel de Cervantes during literature class at the local high school. Practice your Spanish while getting to know your peers in the host community.

Spain offers the perfect setting to study abroad in high school. Rigorous classes, complete Spanish language immersion, and firsthand access to a new and different culture will help you gain the personal, academic, and professional skills needed to be successful in college and beyond.

Orientation

Upon arriving in Spain with your fellow participants, you will be met by CIEE staff in Seville, where you will begin your three-day orientation. During orientation, you will participate in different workshops focusing on a variety of themes — culture, language, academics, social norms, current events — all designed to best prepare you for your experience in Spain. Additionally, you’ll see some of the best that Seville has to offer!

After orientation, you will depart for your host community and spend a couple of days with your homestay before starting school.

Sample Activities

Wherever you’re placed and wherever you go, every experience is designed to give you an insider’s look into multifaceted Spanish culture and life. What can you do for fun? Attend local festivals, visit sights of cultural and historical importance, and take daytrips to places like Seville, Granada, Bilbao, or Madrid with your homestay. You’ll have a whole year or semester to discover the country — on your own, with new CIEE friends, and with your homestay.

Tuition for this program includes the cost of one overnight excursion per semester. These trips vary depending on your placement, but some examples of past excursions have included:

Granada

Join CIEE staff and your fellow CIEE High School Abroad in Spain participants as you travel to Granada to tour the Alhambra/ Albayzín region. You’ll marvel at the spectacular medieval architecture and the grandeur of the Alhambra, a massive Moorish castle.

Cádiz/ Bolonia

Cádiz is the oldest city in Western Europe, often referred to as the "Silver Cup" for its magical sunlight. The various historical and cultural influences make you feel like you’re walking through time. After a day of touring the narrow, winding streets of the city’s historic center, enjoy laying out on some of the most beautiful beaches in Southern Spain.

Historically used as a fishing village and trade link, Bolonia is a spectacular town with one of the best beaches in South Spain. The contrast of the green mountains, the sea, Roman ruins, and the white sand make it a unique and memorable place to visit.

Valencia

Valencia is a charming old city and the capital of the Community of Valencia. As Spain's third-largest city, it is one of the most significant cultural centres along the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Every March, visitors flock to the city for the annual UNESCO-listed Falles celebration. Here you can enjoy paella, ultramodern architecture, beautiful beaches, and the freshest orange juice you’ve ever tasted.

Málaga/Ronda

Embark on an adventure to the Costa del Sol region of Spain, where you will have the chance to visit the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and the beautiful beaches of Málaga. You’ll also get the chance to escape to the countryside to admire the stunning vistas and winding streets of Ronda.

Córdoba

Few places in the world can boast of having been the capital of a Roman province, the capital of an Arab State, and a Caliphate. The historic quarter of Córdoba is a beautiful network of small streets, alleys, squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the Mezquita, which reflects the city's prominent place in the Islamic world during medieval times.

Lisbon

With its rolling landscape overlooking the wide estuary of the Tagus River, this 2,000-year-old city is truly breathtaking. From the medieval neighborhoods of Alfama and Mouraria, to the café lined streets of Chiado, Lisbon is the heart of Portuguese culture.

Please note this list of activities is based on past programs and subject to change at CIEE's discretion to both adapt to local circumstances and participant feedback. Our goal when revising itineraries is always to enhance your experience. Every activity is designed to provide you with a deep immersion in your topic, local culture and sights. Get ready for maximum fun!

What People are Saying

  • “I've been living in Spain for almost 2 months now, and it's starting to feel like I've been here for much longer. My friends are a huge part of that. I'm constantly amazed at how much they care about me (from deliberately asking me questions about differences in America to offering to lend me long uniform pants for gym class since it's getting cold and I don't have my own pair), and I am so glad I found them. They're making it feel like 5 months is not nearly long enough!”
