High School Academy in Lisbon

Overview
Discover the historic city of Lisbon, studying with a cohort of American students as you live and learn in Portugal.

Spend a semester abroad following U.S.-aligned high school classes with a cohort of American students. Our hybrid model allows you to customize your schedule with in-person instruction at the Lisbon CIEE Center and online courses through ASU Prep Global.

Start your journey at the Global Gateway Academy in London, then transition to Lisbon to live with a welcoming host family, connect with your cohort, and immerse yourself in a new culture while staying on track with your high school’s graduation requirements.

Every day brings something new in your semester abroad. Visit the magical town of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and join a traditional Portuguese folk dance workshop. By the end of the semester, you’ll carry home new friendships, fresh perspectives, and confidence that shapes your future.

The Destination

Welcome to Lisbon, a city built on hills, history, and the ocean breeze.

Lisbon is one of Europe’s oldest capitals, older than Rome, Paris, and London. Built across seven hills overlooking the Tagus River, the city is famous for its grand plazas, the iconic Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites), and the soulful sounds of Fado music drifting through historic neighborhoods. Fuel your adventures with warm pastéis de nata (Portugal’s famous custard tarts), fresh seafood, and hearty bifana pork sandwiches.

Explore colorful neighborhoods lined with glazed tile-covered buildings and spend sunny afternoons strolling the coast. From fresh seafood and vibrant markets to historical sites, Lisbon offers a relaxed yet exciting way to experience one of Europe’s most captivating capitals.

Settle into daily life as you ride the iconic yellow tram, admiring tile-covered buildings in countless colors and patterns and soaking up spectacular views of the vibrant city. Explore the dramatic seaside cliffs at Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe’s westernmost point, and end the day watching the sunset from Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. With its rich history and vibrant culture, Lisbon is the perfect place to create unforgettable memories that last a lifetime.
