Paying for Your Gap Year
Study Abroad Scholarships Available
At CIEE, we are committed to breaking down barriers to international education. That's why we're proud to introduce scholarships that help make studying abroad possible for all students. This fall, merit-based awards of $500, as well as larger scholarships based on both merit and financial need, will become available. Need-based applications will require a short essay, academic transcript, and proof of household income (such as a 1040 tax form).
Make Your Trip More Affordable!
Devise a plan on your own or join forces with other student travelers to brainstorm a fundraiser. Reach out to those with similar interests and explain the learning you’ll be doing abroad. Other ideas include:
- Babysitting
- Pet sitting or dog walking
- Mowing lawns or doing yard work
- Washing windows
- Holding a car wash
- Holding a traditional bake sale with an international twist!
- Holding a yard sale
- Selling clothing and other items online
- Asking family and friends if you can use their frequent-flyer mileage
- Being a “user tester” for websites
- Designing a website for a local business or charity
- Teaching adults how to use social media
- Tutoring elementary or middle school students
- Teaching English as a second language online
- Putting on a live musical performance
- Holding an art exhibit (for artists and friends)
- Putting on a play or musical
To promote your services or performances, design and create some eye-catching business cards and/or flyers! Be sure to describe the educational opportunity for which you are raising money.
