6 Ways My Gap Year Abroad Gave Me a Head Start at the University of South Carolina
This post was written by CIEE Global Navigator alum Maxine G. who participated in the Global Navigator Marketing Internship in spring of 2025. She is now in college at the University of South Carolina.
The lessons I learned during my Gap Year Abroad in Seville with CIEE have helped immensely, especially as I’ve moved on to college now at the University of South Carolina.
Below, I’d like to share with you the 6 ways it’s helped me transition to higher education so that you can be inspired to take a gap year abroad too after you graduate high school.
1. Gaining Confidence
My gap year in Sevilla pushed me out of my comfort zone like never before.
I had to navigate a new city in a foreign country, communicate in a different language with my host family, and try things I’d never imagined. So, when I came to USC, I wasn’t afraid to get involved.
Immediately I joined student organizations such as a sorority, Dance Marathon, and as of recent I pledged a business fraternity. That year off gave me the independence and self-assurance to say yes to opportunities without hesitation and strive towards leadership positions.
2. Giving Me a New Perspective

Living abroad gave me a new appreciation for education.
After attending language classes at an international language school, I came to the University of South Carolina with a fresh mind and curiosity. I’m more focused in lectures and often connect my coursework with experiences I had abroad.
Overall, I’m more independent and able to stay organized so I can accomplish my goals successfully.
3. Honing My Spanish Skills
Spending a year immersed in Spanish culture put me ahead of others in regards to my language skills.
I came into USC with an advanced level of fluency, which meant I could skip ahead and take more advanced courses. I participate more confidently in class and utilize my Spanish-speaking skills for jobs, applications and more!
Gap year and high school study abroad programs can help you boost your language skills immensely. In my case, I know it helped me to connect with more people and widen my global perspective.
4. Making Friends with Ease

When you’ve had to start from scratch and make friends in a foreign country, talking to people on campus or introducing yourself to a stranger feels way less scary. My gap year taught me how to interact with people from all backgrounds, and I carried that principle with me to college.
Now, I have a network of friends across campus and feel a strong sense of belonging at USC.
5. Discovering My Passion for International Marketing
During my gap year, I got to observe how different cultures interact.
I had the opportunity to participate in student travel and completely immerse myself to connect with others. That exposure helped me realize I want to work in international marketing, particularly within the beauty and fashion industries. Beforehand, I was completely lost in my aspirations and couldn’t decide what career path to take.
Now, I know myself and my passions better, which has helped me decide which courses to take, what opportunities to apply for and what organizations to involve myself with.
6. Preparing Me to Face College Life

My gap year wasn’t picture perfect. There were hard times when I was lonely, tired and wanted to go home.
However, I grew immensely and learned so much about myself, which has been a huge asset during college. When things get overwhelming, I remind myself I’ve dealt with much harder situations and can accomplish more than I know.
So, you might ask, how can I study abroad in high school or do a Gap program? Look no further at CIEE! You never know how it might change your life!
