The Destination
The streets and avenues of Buenos Aires and its 48 neighborhoods offer cultural outings, varied gastronomy, lively nightlife, and beautiful parks and green spaces. When you study abroad in Argentina, you’ll experience the life, history, and culture of this country filled with world-class museums, cafes, architecture, and more. Buenos Aires is a great study abroad destination for students looking to explore Latin America and learn Spanish language and Latin culture.
Discover the diversity of Buenos Aires, a melting pot of cultures where immigrants from all over the globe converge with indigenous American heritage and Latin way of life. CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with marginalized identities might encounter in Buenos Aires.
Students may study in Buenos Aires for one 12-week semester (fall or spring) or two 12-week semesters (fall and spring).
Excursions & Activities
Ample activities and day-trips will be offered to immerse you in Argentina's culture and historical heritage. Each semester typically includes five day-trips or one overnight and three day-trips.
- Head to the countryside for a slice of traditional daily life, regional food and customs, and beautiful landscapes. You’ll find gauchos on horseback, folk dancers doing the “chacarera”, and classic fair food like grilled meat asados, empanadas, and humitas (corn and cheese wrapped in husks). Depending on the season, visitors can sometimes experience horseback rides, carriages, polo games, or dressage.
- Just an hour north of Buenos Aires, the delta of the Paraná River opens to the Rio de la Plata through thousands of islands and meandering creeks. Enjoy a ride in a scenic boat; visit the municipality of Tigre, home to an Art Museum, rowing clubs, and a lively walkway next to the river. When possible, tours include a visit to the San Isidro Cathedral and the former home of writer Victoria Ocampo.
- Fly to the north of Argentina to learn about its unique culture and landscape. Eat specialty empanadas and visit a Peña folklorica to learn about local music and dances.
Please note this list of activities is based on past programs and subject to change at CIEE's discretion to both adapt to local circumstances and participant feedback. Our goal when revising itineraries is always to enhance your experience. Every activity is designed to provide you with a deep immersion in your topic, local culture and sights.
