Apply for a CIEE Scholarship or Grant

At CIEE, we seek to provide life-changing study abroad experiences to as many motivated students as possible. It’s a critical part of our overall mission: to encourage and prepare students to connect and communicate across cultures, and make a positive impact in today’s interconnected global society.

That’s where our scholarships and grants come in. With a total of $100,000 to award this year, we hope to make our Gap Year Abroad programs accessible to more students than ever before. Check if you qualify and start your application today!

Global Navigator awards are a selective honor that can help you stand out. More than just a one-time benefit, they add weight to your college applications, résumés for career opportunities, and other experiences to come.

These scholarships and grants are open to Gap Year Abroad students in both semester- and year-long programs. Read the descriptions below to see which ones apply to you. The process is highly competitive, so apply early and be sure to complete all the required steps!

Merit Scholarship

Award for up to 20% off the cost of one semester

Can be applied to any Gap Year Abroad program

Applicants must:
  • Write responses to three essay questions
  • Provide a teacher recommendation (required as part of Gap Year Abroad application)
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.0

Merit & Financial Scholarship

Award for up to 50% off the cost of one semester

Can only be applied to Gap Year Abroad Service & Leadership programs*

Applicants must:
  • Write responses to three essay questions
  • Complete questionnaire
  • Provide a teacher recommendation (required as part of Gap Year Abroad application)
  • Submit a 1040 form for the most recent tax year
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.0

Blogging & Social Media Grant

Award for up to $3,500 off the cost of one semester

Can be applied to any Gap Year Abroad program

Grant recipients will be required to complete weekly blog posts – a combination of high-quality written and video content – focused on particular themes provided by CIEE. Blogging topics may include: A Day in the Life of a Gap Year Abroad Student, How to Choose a Study Abroad Program, Meet My Host Family, etc.

Applicants must:
  • Submit essay describing why you want to blog as part of your Gap Year Abroad experience
  • Create an introduction video
  • Provide a link to a sample blog post
  • Include links to profiles on any social media platform
  • Provide a portfolio of past social media/blogging posts – including vlogs, if available – to demonstrate strong writing skills, photography skills and understanding of digital media. We also look for an ability to capture readers’ interest and a sense of style and design, so show us what you’ve got!

  • Fall departures: April 30
  • Spring departures: October 1
Due to the number of applications received, we are unable to consider late or incomplete applications. It is very important that all required scholarship application documents be received on or before the deadline.

Top Tips!
  • Mark the scholarship deadline on your calendar
  • Ask a teacher to write a recommendation, and give him or her plenty of time!
  • Put a lot of thought into your essays. You don’t need to have all the answers. We want to know what you think – and how you think – about humanity and the world around you.
