Halloween in Germany
To say the least… Halloween is not as big here. I did have the presumption that it would be a lot smaller than it actually ended up being. Many people Trick-or-Treat, dress up, and hand out candy! The candy here is a bit different, although it is still pretty much just typical German candy. I ended up with many chocolates and gummies and so far they have all been delicious.
There are some differences such as what you say and how many houses there are. Many people just say “Süßes oder Saures”, but it is not uncommon to have poems recited about getting candy. Along with this, many people answer the door, hear what you have to say, and then get the candy. This was so different than what I was used to in the United States as you would quickly say what you needed, while they had the candy in front of you, and then leave immediately.
My host sister was also able to throw a Halloween party! Many goodies were baked, bat-themed brownies, a crumble cake with eyes on top, and so much more. Many Halloween decorations were put up, which I was not totally sure Germany had many, and her and her friends had a lot of fun! I think it is super fun to be able to share more of an American thing and make it a little bigger in Germany.

Bonn will always have a special place in my heart. Known for its famous Beethoven-Haus and history as the old capital of West Germany, there is so much to see and do. You can spend hours just wandering aimlessly through the cobblestone streets, no destination in mind.
