Our mission is to make academically aligned study abroad programs an integral part of the U.S. high school experience. This is only meaningful if it goes beyond just expanding opportunities for students. We want to provide you with the opportunity to engage in global learning, connect with like-minded educators, and further your professional development. When you experience global education firsthand, you will bring back new perspectives, fresh ideas, and transformative lessons that re-energize your classroom and inspire the next generation of global citizens.
CIEE offers professional development opportunities for educators throughout the year, both in the United States and around the world. Educators are responsible for complying with all applicable laws, employer policies, and school or district approval requirements.
Professional Development Site Visit: Observe a CIEE High School Summer Abroad Program
As part of CIEE’s commitment to advancing global education, educators may be invited to participate in a professional development site visit to observe a CIEE High School Summer Abroad program firsthand. This professional development site visit provides an opportunity to observe classes and student activities alongside fellow U.S. educators, engage with local teachers and instructors, and exchange ideas and best practices for student engagement and global learning. Participants will engage in professional development, peer collaboration, and observation of international education programs to gain new insights that support student learning.
During this five-day CIEE-sponsored professional development site visit, educators may:
- Participate in a professional development site visit at a CIEE program location.
- Observe interactive classes and educational activities led by local CIEE instructors and educators.
- Observe and participate in educational and cultural activities that support educator learning and provide insight into the student learning experience abroad.
- Meet host Families to better understand the student experience abroad.
- Participate in discussions with local educators and exchange best practices with fellow educators.
- Bring back fresh ideas, global perspectives, and new approaches to support student learning.
All participants receive a certificate of completion to claim up to 10 hours of professional development credit, subject to school or district approval.
Attend the Annual CIEE High School Study Abroad Conference
Every fall, CIEE invites educators to attend the annual CIEE High School Study Abroad Conference. During this professional development weekend, educators gather with fellow passionate U.S. high school educators to share best practices in global education.
At this event, you will:
- Participate in interactive workshops led by experienced staff in the U.S. and around the world.
- Engage in discussions on integrating global education in your high school.
- Gain actionable insights to create a more globally minded school culture.
- Broaden your professional network.
All participants receive a certificate of completion to claim up to 10 hours of professional development credit, subject to school or district approval.
Be a Program Leader (Paid Position)
Are you interested in leading a CIEE High School Summer Abroad program and supporting students as they learn and grow through an international educational experience? We want you to be a Program Leader!
As a Program Leader, you will:
- Mentor and support students participating in a summer study abroad program.
- Earn a weekly salary based on experience.
- Receive program-related housing, meals, and training.
- Develop skills in group management, intercultural learning, and experiential learning.
- Collaborate with a network of educators and global education professionals.
Earn up to 70 hours of professional development as a Program Leader.
Join a Study Abroad Program for Educators!
Next summer, join fellow high school educators for an immersive global learning experience in an international setting.
At the CIEE Global Educator Institute, you will:
- Engage in dynamic interdisciplinary and global learning sessions.
- Observe CIEE High School Study Abroad programs in action and participate in cultural and academic activities that support educator learning and professional development.
- Enhance your instructional practices while deepening your global competency.
- Collaborate with educators from across the U.S. to create innovative, globally focused lesson plans.
- Gain first-hand insights and new perspectives to bring back to your students and classroom.
Earn up to 40 hours of professional development through participation in the CIEE Global Educator Institute.
