The First Two Weeks in Germany

Hannah is an American student studying in Germany as part of the CBYX (Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange) scholarship exchange program.

Hallo! It’s officially been two weeks in Germany!

D.C. was awesome. We had our orientation packed full of activities! On the first day, we spent the morning at the U.S. State Department learning about diplomacy and what the State Department does. My favorite thing we did at the State Department was a simulation where we served as leaders of fictional countries. We had to debate different economic and moral issues and come to a sustainable compromise.

Later that day, we had a tour of monuments and memorials. My favorite part of the tours were the views of the city from the Lincoln Monument! After the tours, we enjoyed dinner at Hard Rock Cafe.

On the second day, I was excited and nervous. Getting on the plane felt surreal. I couldn’t believe it was actually happening. I was nervous because I knew I was going to miss a lot from the U.S., but I was also excited because I knew that I was going to find new things in Germany!

One big difference between the U.S. and Germany is the food. The foods I miss the most from the U.S. are ranch, BBQ wings, different soda flavors, and American peanut butter. Some new things I love in Germany include German pastries, spaghetti eis, and Kartoffelknödel!

Arriving at language camp was exciting! The program I’m with (GIVE) has kids stay in host families for the 4 weeks of language camp!

Living with another CBYX student and a host family for language camp has been a good way to acclimate. I’ve learned a lot from everyday communication in German with my host family. Starting the program knowing very little German has been difficult. I still don’t know much, but I’m learning a lot every day.

Language classes have also been going well! I’ve learned a lot from the class. The way the teachers engage everyone is awesome. They always have fun games or activities to learn German. 

After language classes, we usually have an afternoon activity. These activities include museums, sights, and sports! My favorite activity we’ve had so far has been the all-you-can-eat cake buffet! On weekends, we also have activities. Usually, on the weekends we go on a day trip to places like Munich or Nuremberg.

I’m very excited for the next two weeks of language camp and the many adventures that lie ahead! Bis Bald!
