Hallo!

Hi! My name is Lorena Sandoval and I am from Austin, Texas. The upcoming year, which is getting closer, excites me in every possible way. CBYX has been a dream since last year; whenever I started making final decisions regarding what I wanted to do after high school. I feel like it was yesterday when I finally submitted my application after proofreading my essays multiple times, and now pre-departure orientation in Washington is no less than 1 month away. I also just graduated from high school. Time sure goes fast! I knew CBYX was the right program for me after talking to a 2018-2019 scholar before submitting my application. Julia Oborna was crucial to my understanding of the program, she was open to telling me everything about her experience from her host family to her travels around Europe, but she also made sure I really understood what I could be experiencing the next fall. Julia also read my essays, and through them, she told me I really exhibited traits that the CBYX committee was looking for. Before my interview, she told me to be myself and to show the interviewers who I was apart from what they had already read about me. 

Learning languages has been a passion of mine since I was little. Currently, I know two other languages other than English -- Spanish and French. I actually learned Spanish first and I learned English at school in Mexico for nearly 14 years. I remember when I was little I truly enjoyed my English classes. However, it wasn’t until I moved to the US in 2015 that my English improved and became more native. Thanks to that experience I realize that living in a country in which you are forced to speak your target language at all times truly makes you sound more natural and you learn more vocabulary that actual people who speak the language used on a daily basis. Stepping into this journey will for sure be something out of my comfort zone mostly because I only know basic German and I have never been that far away from my family. 

Before Pre-Departure Orientation, in Washington D.C I have been learning German on Memrise. That platform has taught me basic German that will allow me to survive and a lot of easy grammar that I will be able to fully understand after 4 weeks at language camp, in Hedersleben. I have also been spending a lot of time finishing college essays and waiting until they open so I can submit before I leave to Germany. In addition, I have truly been enjoying my family and friends here in Mexico as I won’t be seeing them for nearly a year! I will soon return to the US and start packing my life in one luggage as my departure gets closer and closer every day. In Austin, I will say my last goodbyes to my friends from high school whom I am really close to and without a doubt I will miss too much. 

Lastly, I am really excited to be an official blogger and be able to share my experience abroad with future and past scholars. I know everyone’s experience is quite different, but before applying it is important to have a good understanding of the program. By blogging, I will be able to use my English and my Spanish more often since people have told me their English has become really basic as they don’t use it as much. CIEE has given me the opportunity to blog in both English and Spanish and I think it will benefit many families like mine because even though my parents understand English I think they would have liked to read personal anecdotes from current scholars in Spanish. Therefore, I am beyond thrilled to be able to help others through blogging bilingually.

Hola! Me llamo Lorena Sandoval y soy de Austin, Texas. El año próximo, que se aproxima cada día más y más, me tiene muy emocionada. CBYX ha sido un sueño, por fin hecho realidad, desde el año pasado cuando comencé a planear qué haría después del bachillerato. Siento que fue ayer cuando entregué mi solicitud después de leer tantas veces mis ensayos suplementarios, y ¡ahora la orientación en Washington D.C está a menos de un mes! También a finales de Mayo salí del bachillerato. ¡El tiempo sí que se pasa rápido! Supe que CBYX era el programa correcto para mí ya que antes de entregar mi solicitud hable con con Julia Oborna quien participó en el programa este año. Ella fue de gran ayuda ya que me contó desde su experiencia con su familia anfitriona hasta de sus viajes en Europa, pero más que nada se encargó de que me diera cuenta de que es lo que podría vivir el próximo año. Julia también leyó mis ensayos y por medio de ellos me dijo que ella creía que yo realmente tenía lo que el comité estaba buscando. Antes de mi entrevista me dijo que fuera yo misma y que les mostrará a los entrevistadores quien soy yo además de lo que ya habían leído en mi solicitud. 

Aprender idiomas ha sido una pasión mía desde muy pequeña. Actualmente se otros dos idiomas aparte del Español — Inglés y Francés. De hecho aprendí Español primero y después aprendí Inglés en la escuela en México por casi 14 años. Recuerdo que cuando era chiquita siempre disfrutaba de mis clases de inglés. Sin embargo no fue hasta que me mude a Estados Unidos en el 2015 que mi Inglés mejoró y comenzó a sonar más natural. Gracias a aquella experiencia me di cuenta que vivir en el país donde se habla el idioma que estás aprendiendo es la manera en la que estás forzado a hablar el idioma y comienzas a aprender más vocabulario que realmente usan los nativos. Comenzar esta aventura es definitivamente salirme de mi zona de confort más que nada porque solo se Alemán básico y nunca he estado tan lejos de mi familia. 

Antes de que comience esta aventura ya he estado aprendiendo Alemán en una aplicación llamada Memrise. Esa plataforma me ha enseñado Alemán básico, el cual me ayudará sobrevivir y también he aprendido un poco de gramática que podré entender completamente en el campamento de idioma en donde si me enseñara un maestro Alemán. De igual manera, he pasado mucho tiempo escribiendo mis ensayos para la universidad ahora solo falta entregar las solicitudes de admisión antes de que me vaya a Alemania. Y más que nada he disfrutado mucho a mi familia y amigos aquí en México ya que no los veré por mucho tiempo! Pronto volveré a Austin y comenzare a empacar mi vida en una maleta ya que el 8 de agostos se acerca más y más cada día. En Austin le diré adiós a mis amigos de la prepa los cuales son muy cercanos a mi y sin duda los extrañare mucho. 

La verdad estoy sumamente emocionada por ser una blogger oficial para el programa y poder compartir mi experiencia con futuros candidatos y con exalumnos. Se que la experiencia de todos es muy diferente, pero es importante tener un buen conocimiento de las logísticas del programa. Por medio del blog podré utilizar tanto mi Ingles como mi Estañol en un formato más formal ya que mucha gente me ha dicho que poco a poco su Inglés se hace mas básico por el hecho de que no lo usan tanto. CIEE me ha otorgado la oportunidad de escribir en el blog en Inglés y en Español y creo que esto beneficiara a muchas familias como la mía ya que aunque mis papas entienden el inglés creo que los hubiera gustado leer anécdotas en Español. ¡Así que me tiene muy emocionada poder ayudar a otros!
