High School Abroad in Spain

Today marks exactly 6 months since I arrived in Spain. It is honestly the weirdest thing to think about. I feel like I just got here yesterday but also like I have been here forever. I was talking to my parents back in the states the other day about school and about how my exams were annoying and that I was jealous they were going to Mexico for spring break and they stopped me and said, “Maya...you’re in Spain.” I felt bad because I had been complaining about something not a lot of people get the chance to do, but that also made me realize that that’s how long I‘ve been here. I have been here so long that it’s just part of my life now. I go to school like a regular student, go out on the weekends with my friends and make dumb jokes with my host sisters. This is my life now, and I’m so happy that everything I’ve done and everything my parents have done for me has lead me here to build this new life. I get upset once in a while when I realize that it’s temporary, but the relationships that I have and am still building will last a life time.

While I am sad that I’m over half way done with my year abroad, I’m also super excited for the next four months. At the end of the month, I get to go to Belgium with my school. I will get to see the beautiful scenery and eat all the Belgian chocolate I can. And right after that, I’m going to Málaga with CIEE (Yesterday we also came back from Portugal! But I’ll make a separate post for that). After that, spring break, Semana Santa and Feria. Then there’s kind of a two month gap where there isn’t really anything planned until the program ends and my family comes to Spain. Even though I don’t want the program to end, I am super excited to see my family, and to show them everything I have experienced and to meet everyone that has become a part of my life.
