Since 1947, CIEE: the Council on International Educational Exchange has been in pursuit of its mission, "to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world." Our services to people studying and teaching abroad are more important than ever. As we look ahead, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles and values that guide this mission statement.
Developed from this mission born over 60 years ago and with an understanding that travel should be meaningful, CIEE Teach Abroad programs have prepared and sent individuals just like you to teach, live, learn, and grow overseas for over ten years.
Teaching abroad is a life-changing experience that bears no resemblance to moving across town. There are a few organizations that match English teachers with overseas institutions for lower fees, but none provide the services and support that CIEE does. We handle contract negotiation, insurance from accident to illness, and sometimes visa procurement. We are experienced at advising people as they make their plans to teach abroad, so you can call us for insider information and recommendations. And, we conduct week-long orientations to acquaint you with the local language, culture, and teaching techniques. Most importantly, we have staff on the ground to assist and advise you while you’re there.

What Makes CIEE Different than a Recruiter?
Ask yourself what it might cost to live overseas for a semester or year without a stipend or insurance? Add the cost of housing or the time and energy necessary to solve problems with little or no support and it becomes clear why people choose to teach with CIEE. Simply put, we are a program provider, not a recruiter. CIEE Teach Abroad programs select qualified individuals and provide services for fees.
We would do our research before paying to go abroad, and you should too! To choose a program that can help you work toward accomplishing you personal or professional goals, always consider what opportunities are available for the price, remembering that costs are not always financial. If getting a paid position overseas were a snap, everyone would do it. If you can make the experience happen on your own and you are comfortable with the risks involved in doing so, take the challenge! In a nutshell your CIEE program fee covers many things related to preparing, training, and supporting your experience. This includes valuable program support pre-departure and in-country. We are your reference board and problem solvers should you need advice or assistance. Additionally, your program fee covers your pre-departure school assignment, an in-country orientation program, insurance coverage, and a program handbook.
