About Cape Town

Situated on the southern tip of Africa, Cape Town is a vibrant multicultural city with a rich selection of day and night activities. Water sports, mountaineering, nightclubs, and restaurants are readily available. The city is also a microcosm of the challenges facing many African countries in transition: how to successfully operate within a global economy, while at the same time grappling with the vast socio-economic inequalities that are the legacy of the colonial and apartheid past.

Where You'll Study

University of Cape Town

Established as the South African College in 1829, the University of Cape Town is internationally recognized as one of Africa’s leading research universities. Its campus
has sweeping lawns, pathways, trees, ponds, and waterfalls that combine with attractive physical structures and extensive playing fields to create a pleasant study environment. A range of commercial, medical, recreational, and sporting facilities is available on campus. These include a swimming pool, gymnasium, basketball, tennis, badminton and squash courts, and a weight room.

Thoughts From Abroad

Here in South Africa we talk a great deal about transformation and its role in moving society forward. The year 2010 will mark 16 years of democratic rule in South Africa, and it will also see the nation play host to the one of the largest sporting events in the world: the FIFA Soccer World Cup. More than just a worldwide celebration of sporting competition, the FIFA World Cup has provided the impetus for transformation of various kinds: foremost among them a massive overhaul of the transportation infrastructure which is one of our enduring legacies of apartheid.

South Africans forward to the challenges and opportunities that the World Cup will bring. However, in its’ wake, there will remain the need to focus efforts on issues of social justice and basic human rights. Although there is not an easy road ahead, South Africa and South Africans will amaze you with their grace and commitment to the challenges, and the campus of the University of Cape Town and the city at-large will provide fascinating platforms from which you can witness and take part in the process of transformation.
