About Beijing

As the capital of the world’s most populous nation, Beijing is at the center of much that happens in China. It is a city of over 15 million people struggling to adapt as China emerges as a global player. Beijing reflects China’s long and evolving history when different dynasties based here constructed some of the nation’s most well-known and culturally important sites such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace. In addition to being the political and cultural center of China, Beijing is known as the birthplace of Chinese cinema and modern art. Beijing also has China’s largest concentration of top research institutions.

Where You'll Study

Peking University

As one of China’s most prestigious universities, Peking University (PKU) was founded in 1898 and has a long tradition of scholarly excellence and political activism. Its primary mission is to train scholars for advanced research in the natural and social sciences. More than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled. The PKU campus comprises a blend of traditional and modern buildings and architectural structures.

Thoughts From Abroad

Beijing is a fascinating combination of modern development and ancient cultures. Taking classes with your peers at Peking University will be a unique experience that will provide insight into China like few American students have ever experienced. I’m confident that it will change your life.

academic year: 30 semester/45 quarter hours

Eligibility Requirements

Students must take PKU’s initial placement test in Beijing to qualify for direct enrollment. Typically, students who speak and write at the superior level on the ACTFL scale are likely to pass the PKU placement test. These students have often completed Fourth Year Chinese or the equivalent at the college level. Students who do not pass this test are required to enroll in the Intensive Chinese Language program at the CIEE Study Center at Peking University.

Students are strongly encouraged to provide a current HSK (National Chinese Language Proficiency Test) score along with their application to expedite the admissions process. HSK tests should be taken one year prior to applying to the program. Students who have already received an intermediate B certificate or above on the HSK advanced exam may be exempt from the PKU language proficiency exam. HSK testing sites, which are available throughout the U.S., typically offer testing once each year in the spring or fall.

  • Overall GPA 3.0
  • Junior standing and above
  • Note: Peking University will not accept students who are citizens of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan ROC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau. This includes those who are permanent U.S. residents.
