Before you leave

We’ll make sure you have everything you need to teach abroad, from packing advice to sound guidance on how to settle into your new teaching position.

When you sign up for your program, you’ll be enrolled in an online course designed to help you build a framework of practical, cultural, and professional skills. You also can call us: CIEE professionals can help answer any questions you have.

When you arrive

CIEE understands how overwhelming it can be to land in an unfamiliar country, with an extended stay ahead. You’ll have many questions. We’re here to help – and make you feel welcome.

When you arrive, you’ll be picked up at the airport, and will join us for several days of orientation with fellow participants in Santo Domingo before beginning your assignment.

The orientation features:

  • Lessons on navigating Dominican culture
  • Safety suggestions and health tips for tropical living
  • Introduction to the Dominican educational system and expectations
  • Accommodations and meals
  • Sightseeing and cultural activities

Teachers generally live in apartments and pay rent each month. Housing situations vary between teaching sites. In most rural placements, the Ministry of Education helps teachers secure suitable housing near their school.

iNext travel insurance

There’s plenty to think about when you travel overseas. Peace of mind is priceless, and CIEE provides it by including insurance as part of every Teach Abroad program. U.S. resident participants are covered by iNext, which supplements your private insurance to cover the cost of accidents and unplanned medical attention while abroad. The policy also offers emergency evacuation coverage with 24-hour worldwide assistance.
