Choose from Three Types of Top-Tier U.S. Secondary Schools for International Students

CIEE High School Study USA is designed for international students who want something more than other high school programs offer:

  • A choice of top-quality schools – CIEE High School Study USA students get to choose where they study
  • Rich student-life – diverse experiences at day or boarding schools, with enriching activities and sports
  • Cultural immersion – the powerful, life-changing interactions at the heart of every CIEE program

American high schools are diverse. Most are part of community public school systems. Some, however, offer a different kind of educational experience. Many of these boarding and selective private day schools draw top students from all over the world.

Our schools offer your students stimulating intellectual experiences. Admissions often are competitive, so the student body represents the best of the best. At these schools, your students’ classmates bring something extra, both to the classroom and after school activities.

Private Boarding Schools

These schools are leaders in American secondary education – elite institutions that place students firmly on the track that leads to a top-level university education. Students live in dormitories on campus under the supervision of faculty members, usually sharing rooms.

The boarding school experience is unique because it demands more from students who are immersed, around the clock, in a tight-knit learning community. The friendships that are forged at boarding school – with students and faculty alike – often last a lifetime.

Faculty relationships in particular are unique, because students live in close proximity to their teachers and often get to know them personally. In many cases, faculty members go beyond their school duties, mentoring and organizing activities that build a sense of family and community.

Private Day Schools

Some boarding schools accept day students, and there are also privately run day schools that have selective admissions. Here, the educational experience is very similar to a boarding school, except that students live off-campus, with a CIEE host family.

These high-quality schools feature rigorous standards, small class sizes, excellent facilities, and extensive athletics and enriching activities. Many offer Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses.

Graduates of these high-performing schools tend to be in demand at universities, and college admission rates are typically higher at these schools than at public schools.

Public Schools

Some of the best public schools in the nation work with CIEE. As part of the CIEE High School Study USA program, students choose the city and state where they will study – not an option with many other programs – and can choose from a large number of schools in prime locations.

Exchange students who attend public U.S. schools with CIEE High School Study USA attend for only one year. Often, participants enroll with CIEE for their senior year, so they can take part in graduation and get a U.S. high school diploma.

Students looking for a “typical” American school should look to public schools first. There, they’ll meet, study with, and get to know American teens, join their clubs, play on their teams, and take part in after-school activities.
