Our Student Exchange Partners

CIEE is a nonprofit, mission-driven organization dedicated to international education and cultural exchange. We work closely with the U.S. government as well as several leading educational organizations to improve quality, broaden access, and create opportunities for meaningful cultural interaction.

The U.S. Department of State consistently grants us sponsorship of more Exchange Visitor Program J-1 visas than any other organization. CIEE also administers several diplomatic grant programs on behalf of the U.S. government.

Advancing Study Abroad through Public & Industry Partnerships

CIEE is very active in the field of international education, working with educators, nongovernmental organizations, foundations, and standards organizations. We do this because we believe strongly that international education and exchange should be done with a purpose, whether it’s to help meet academic, policy, or social goals.

U.S. Department of State

State DepartmentCIEE holds the designation of Exchange Visitor Program provider in accordance with the administrative regulations issued under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961. CIEE applies for this designation biannually and the U.S. Department of State is responsible for approval.

Participating students enter the United States to attend secondary school on a J-1 visa, through the State Department-sponsored CIEE High School Exchange USA program. Under the visa rules, all visiting students are required to complete up to one year of academic study at an accredited public or private institution during their stay.

Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET)

CSIETCSIET is a private nonprofit organization that monitors the quality of youth-exchange programs throughout the United States. CSIET has recognized CIEE as a reputable provider of international youth-exchange programs. CSIET has placed us on its advisory list, a trusted source of information for schools, students, and host families.

Alliance for International Education and Cultural Exchange

AllianceCIEE is a member of the Alliance, an association of 86 nongovernmental international education and cultural-exchange organizations. This organization serves as the public-policy voice of the exchange community in the United States. Its mission is to formulate and promote public policies to support the growth and well being of international-exchange links between the people of the United States and other nations.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award

President's Volunteer ServiceCIEE is proud to be a certifying organization for this prestigious award honoring individuals for their civic participation and commitment to others. CIEE students are eligible for this award when participating in service within their host communities — an integral part of our high school programs. Several have earned this honor.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators

NAFSACIEE furthers CIEE furthers its mission of fostering international exchange through its involvement in NAFSA conferences and intellectual discourse. NAFSA provides a forum for international educators to share resources and information about the field of study abroad.

Forum on Education Abroad

Forum on Education AbroadCIEE participates extensively in Forum conferences, offering leadership, and sharing ideas about the future of international-education exchange. The Forum focuses on developing and implementing standards of good practice in study abroad, encouraging and supporting research initiatives, and offering educational programs and resources to its members. Its mission is to help improve education-abroad programs for the benefit of participants.

Becas International High School Scholarship Program

CIEE brings 10th-grade students from Galicia, Spain, to the United States through the Becas International High School Scholarship Program. The scholarship rewards applicants for academic excellence and financial need, with a goal to broaden perspectives and English ability. This opportunity was created in 2009 through a partnership between the Foundation Pedro Barrié de la Maza and the Fundación Amancio Ortega.
