Self-Paced Course Outline

This course is flexible and designed to allow you to complete coursework at any time during a six-month period. Students work independently, attending online presentations and completing online readings. This means you can work whenever you’d like, and wherever you like — whether that’s early in the morning, late at night, in a coffee shop, at home, or wherever you feel most inspired.

Modules 0-3

Module 0) Pre-course – intro to course and how to navigate 
Virtually meet your peers, get comfortable with the online Canvas platform, and prepare yourself for what’s to come.  

Module 1) The world of TEFL  
Why learn English?  A look at the types of English learners and an introduction to fundamental concepts from the intercultural field.  

Module 2) Key approaches and methods  
Cover different language teaching methodologies and approaches to communication. Understand cultural differences in teaching language, classroom organization, and feedback.  

Module 3) Teaching vocabulary and grammar 
Learn to teach grammar and vocabulary effectively by breaking it down and covering new strategies.

Modules 4-6

Module 4) Planning lessons 
Go over the key elements of a lesson such as classroom activities, warm-ups, fillers and cool-downs.  

Module 5) Teaching skills 
Introduce receptive skills and ways to teach reading. Learn methods for teaching listening and speaking the language and then move on to methods of teaching writing. 

Module 6) TEFL and you  
Develop an intercultural mindset in the field of language education and discover effective ways to tackle your first week in the classroom.

Grammar Modules 1-3

A deep dive into the study of grammar. This section is not required but serves as a helpful review.  

Module 1) Grammar study 1  
Unpack parts of speech, sentence structure and explaining parts of speech such as verbs.  

Module 2) Grammar study 2 
Review verb tenses and conditional forms.  

Module 3) Grammar study 3 
An overview of parts of grammar including voice and mood. Learn to explain pronouns, phrases and clauses.

60-Hour TEFL Certification FAQs

This course is right for you, if:

  • You have no teaching (or TEFL) experience and are looking to explore it

To be eligible for a CIEE TEFL course, you must:

  • Be a native English speaker or have an advanced level of English proficiency equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) C1 level or higher. Nonnative English speakers must submit proof of their English proficiency.
  • Be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Have strong reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills.
  • Be able to use a personal computer and have consistent access to the internet.

Our 60-hour CIEE TEFL certificate is ideal for current educators looking for a refresh or those looking to volunteer in their local communities. However, if you want a TEFL certificate that meets the standards of most employers, you should consider signing up for the 150-hour CIEE TEFL certification course, our most popular course.  This course exceeds the international standards (120 hour minimum) and includes a 20 hours of practicum, which many schools and organizations look for in a TEFL certificate.

The CIEE 60-Hour TEFL Certificate course offers you up to six months to complete the coursework. This flexible timeframe allows you to learn at your own pace, fitting your TEFL studies around your existing schedule.

Once you finish all the required modules and assignments for the 60-hour TEFL Certificate, CIEE will process the completion of your course. There will be a short processing window (a few days to a week) for CIEE to verify your completion and to generate the TEFL certificate. You can expect to receive a digital copy of your certificate via email once all the documentation has been verified.
