About Our Program Fees

CIEE, a non-profit organization, has been sending university graduates abroad to teach English since 1997. Our program in Thailand includes your visa fee, orientation on arrival, emergency insurance, and a high level of support throughout your experience (see all features below). To cover those costs, there is a program fee: $1,750 for one semester, or $1,950 for two semesters. Once we accept your application, you’ll make a first payment of $500 to reserve your spot ($1,000 for programs with TEFL). The remaining balance of the program fee is due a few months later after you accept a job offer from a Thai school. CIEE alumni automatically receive a 10% discount!

Job Description

As a lead classroom teacher, you’ll focus on improving the conversational English skills of your eager students with creative classroom exercises and educational games.

Often, positions open to teach other subjects, such as math, science, technology, computers, social studies, and physical education. Candidates with educational backgrounds in these areas are encouraged to note a willingness to teach subjects other than English on their applications. Also conducted in English, these classes can be smaller than English language classes, and pay a higher monthly salary of 30,000 to 33,000 baht/month.

This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and promote international goodwill while you earn money to support yourself. The cost of living in Thailand is quite reasonable, so your salary will go a long way.

Compensation

The compensation package includes provided accommodation for all teachers and a salary between 28,000-33,000 baht per month (approx. $920-$1,080). Willingness to teach subjects other than English as well as prior teaching experience results in a higher monthly salary.

There are three compensation tiers:

  • 28,000 baht (approx. $920)/month plus housing: This is the base salary for participants teaching English.

  • 30,000 baht (approx. $980)/month plus housing: Participants can qualify for this salary one of three ways
    • Having a TEFL certificate before starting to teach
    • Teaching non-English subjects
    • Having a Bachelor’s degree in a hard science or math and teaching those subjects.
  • 33,000 baht (approx. $1,080)/month plus housing: Teachers with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education

These salaries are generous in local terms – about twice what local teachers earn – and your wages can easily finance independent travel after the semester ends. In addition, two semester Teach in Thailand Plus participants earn a completion bonus of 20,000 baht to offset return airfare upon successful completion of contract.

  • Schools

Positions are available at private and public partner schools across Thailand. Most placements are available in the central, eastern, and northern regions of the country; while positions in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the southern provinces are limited and typically more competitive. We do not place teachers in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun, and Songkhla.

You can request placement at a particular level and location, but keep in mind that placements are driven by demand and that Thai schools make the final hiring decisions, so we cannot guarantee that requests will be met.

  • Workload

A typical teaching load is 20-25 classes per week, depending on the school. In addition to time in the classroom, participants are expected to devote time to class planning, presentations, faculty meetings, and a range of extracurricular activities. Participants should expect a 40-hour workweek.

This allows plenty of opportunity to travel, explore the countryside, and enjoy Thai culture. The Teach in Thailand program midyear (October) entry option also gives you a one- to two-month break in the middle of the program that you can use to travel.

What People are Saying

  • It changes your life in a way that you will never be able to preconceive and, sometimes, fathom as its happening. CIEE takes care of everything. Every penny has been paid back in tenfold with the experience I've had so far in Thailand.

Hayley T. | Teach in Thailand
  • They were organized and professional. Orientation was great and sets you up with friends in your host country.

Joanna J. | Teach in Thailand
  • I feel like CIEE was a great way to find my way and place in Thailand. I could not have done it on my own. Working with CIEE allowed me and those who love me to trust my safety while teaching abroad.

John R. | Teach in Thailand
  • I thought the program was well structured and organized. CIEE provided in depth insight, as well as the proper means and measures to start a career teaching abroad.

Joseph K. | Teach in Thailand
  • I personally loved the convenience and the extra assistance (I felt like I walked through the process with my hand held!), but I also realize it's not the only option and you can still find schools outside of a program such as CIEE. However, I'm so glad I got to skip that and got the placement work done for me (especially since I'm very happy with my placement).
