Job Description

You'll teach English as a lead teacher or language assistant at a primary school to students ages 6-15. As a lead teacher, you will create diverse lessons to help your students learn how to read, speak, and write in English.  You will be responsible for grading your students and running your classroom. As a foreign language assistant you will support lead teachers by facilitating conversational English activities. At times you may be asked to teach entire classes under the supervision of a lead teacher. In general, you won't be responsible for grading, discipline, or the independent supervision of students. Exact responsibilities of lead teachers and language assistants do vary according to each individual school. You may also have the opportunity to teach other subjects like Math or Science if you are interested.

Students across the Czech Republic begin learning English in elementary school, but they usually do not have the opportunity to practice speaking English with a native English speaker. As a lead teacher or language assistant, you will facilitate fun, conversational activities that will bring the English language to life for your students.

CIEE participants earn 24,000 CZK (approx. $1,055) per month when accommodation is not included or 14,000 CZK (approx. $615) per month when accommodation is included. This is a standard salary for local teachers teaching 17-18 hours per week. Payroll taxes will be deducted from the participant’s salary in order to pay for national health insurance and other benefits. Some schools will provide rent-free accommodations as part of their compensation package. Participants with assignments that do not include housing can expect to receive higher salaries. Since the cost of living in the Czech Republic is much lower than in the United States, your salary should allow you to cover basic living expenses.  Many schools have the opportunity for you to earn overtime teaching up to 10 additional hours per week.  Most teachers also tutor outside of their regular working hours to earn additional spending money.  Teachers who tutor can double or triple the amount they earn each month. If you’re hoping to travel a great deal during your free time, bring additional funds to cover your expenses.

Participants will be placed at public or private schools on the outskirts of Prague or in small towns surrounding the city.  Most placements are at primary schools with limited secondary school placements available. Your placement will be no more than 1.5 hours from Prague. These schools are interested in hiring foreign language assistants and lead teachers because they recognize the value of giving their students practice speaking English with native speakers.

CIEE participants typically teach 17-18 hours per week, depending on the assignment. This does not include time for class planning and grading, faculty meetings, and extracurricular activities. You’ll have a busy schedule, but the program and vacation schedule leave plenty of time to travel, explore the outdoors, and enjoy life in the Czech Republic.
