Ramp up your Spanish language skills while visiting palaces and castles and kicking back on island beaches.

Discover Roman ruins, a Moorish casbah and underwater caves. Go on a scavenger hunt in a 14th-century Medieval castle. Kayak and snorkel in the clean blue waters of Mallorca. Whether on land or at sea, every day you’ll be immersed in the unique Majorcan culture and put your Spanish conversational skills to the test. While mornings are spent in language classes at a local university, afternoons are for museum trips, intercultural activities and outdoor exploration.

In the capital of Palma you’ll live like a local, sharing authentic meals with your host family and learning first-hand about island traditions. You’ll live in a homestay and take language and culture classes at a university building downtown. You’ll spend three days in a youth camp with friends at the Albergue La Victoria summer camp located on the natural area of Alcudia, in a privileged environment surrounded by impressive mountains and transparent sea waters.

From day one you’ll dive right into the culture, through group activities with peers:  Cook and eat traditional Majorcan recipes with a Spanish chef, while learning about the Mediterranean diet. Try a range of tapas, from traditional pan-fried calamari to fresh sushi, at the Central Market. Go out for amazing handmade ice cream (try the traditional almond flavor!) or an ensaïmada, Majorca’s most popular pastry, in the city’s oldest chocolatería. Visit a Spanish school to see how students of your same age live and study in Palma.  Help clean up a natural beach as part of the “Keep this island a paradise” campaign.  Meander through the farmer’s market where merchants sell fruits and vegetables alongside livestock animals, clothes and shoes, and buckets of snails!

For a small island, there’s no shortage of cultural attractions. Learn about modern art at Joan Miró’s Cultural Foundation and Museum, Modernista and contemporary architecture at the Baluard Museum, and political graffiti on a street art tour around the city.

Nurture your newfound independence in the City of Calm.

Half of the island’s population – some 400,000 people – call the Oceanside city of Palma home. It bustles with tourism and commerce, from its palm-fringed marina bristling with masts, to its tapestry of Modernist, Moorish, Gothic, and Medieval architecture, tiny shops, and busy squares. The city is dominated by three magnificent structures – the impressive Gothic Cathedral, the elegant Moorish Almudaina Palace, and the round Medieval Bellver Castle. Flat terrain makes for easy walking and biking. With these options plus easily accessed bus and metro, it takes just 5 to 20 minutes to get from your host family’s home to language classes to the CIEE Study Center located on the campus of Universitat de les Illes Balears, a short distance from downtown. Daily life is punctuated with time-honored traditions and festivals, including colorful Day of the Dead events, religious Easter parades, the Day of the Balearic Islands at the Medieval Market, Palma carnival, and the festive Day of the Angel, dating back to 1407. In contrast to busy Palma, the rest of the island features small villages and stone houses among Mallorca’s mountains, valleys, and coves. Natural treasures include the Tramuntana Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and of course, the surrounding sapphire waters. In or out of the city, it’s easy to adopt the local active lifestyle – walking, running, kayaking, cycling, surfing, and sailing are common – and its distinctly Mediterranean diet featuring pasta, rice, eggs, vegetables, meats, fish, fruits – and plenty of olive oil.
