Trace the history of this magnificent city through the lens of its art – from its Moorish origins to its ultra-modern present.

Madrid is a heavyweight among “art capitals.” Three of the world’s most important art collections are located in one block alone – the Paseo del Arte – making it easy to view works by Velázquez, El Greco, Picasso, and Dali all in one afternoon. That still leaves time for dabbling in projects of your own, from outdoor photography to studio art.

As an “artist-in-residence” in this experiential program, you’ll learn about Madrid by exploring the Spanish greats and ornate buildings of world renown. But you’ll also find a blooming contemporary art scene of photography, graffiti, architecture and studio art. It’s hard to imagine a more lively place to study art, history and the connection between the two.

Morning classes prep you for exciting afternoon tours and excursions to working studios. You’ll meet local artists and photographers, create art projects with local Spanish-speaking peers, and take a survival Spanish course to help you navigate the city.

As a final project presentation, you’ll focus on a Spanish painter, architect, studio artist or photographer, or create a short documentary video about the significance of Madrid as an art destination. You’ll return home with a certificate in Art & History, an amazing portfolio, and inspiration to make your mark in the year ahead.

Fans of art and architecture, football, food and fashion flock to the lively Spanish capital.

Madrid is one of the preeminent art capitals of the world. Its astonishing collection of art museums is the legacy of private collectors and Spanish royals who courted the great painters of the day during various centuries and built up collections of masterpieces from all over Europe.

But one cannot live on famous artwork alone. Madrid is a foodie’s paradise and it’s never hard to find a mouthwatering snack, tapas plate or hearty meal wherever you go. Iberian ham is legendary and the must-try dish. Chocolate con churros, crispy sticks of deep-fried dough dipped into mugs of warm melted chocolate, are an amazingly addictive treat served up at cafés and stands on every street.

One of the largest cities in Europe, Madrid is full of vibrant people who love going out, dining out, and enjoying the city. They also love sports and are home to two of the best football (soccer) clubs in the world. If you’re looking for a bargain or the latest fashion, there’s a huge shopping district selling anything and everything. In short, there’s no shortage of things to do!
