Fin de semana

On Saturday we visited Cuenca, a beautiful moorish town set on a hill in the region of Castilla la Mancha. It’s a charming place full of winding cobblestone streets and surrounded by a stone wall. It is well known for the“casas colgadas” or “hanging houses”, a series of buildings that rest on the edge of a cliff.

Our first stop was the bridge of San Pablo where we could see the city from afar.

We crossed the bridge, taking in the scenery along the way, and entered one of the casas colgadas, which is now the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español. As we wandered through the maze-like museum, each student shared information with us about one artist they had studied in preparation for the visit.

From there we walked around, stopping by the main square and the gothic style cathedral, before heading to the Antonio Pérez Foundation. This building, originally a 16th-century town hall, is the home to an impressive collection of contemporary art.

After a morning of sight seeing, it was time to sit down and have a bite to eat.

Students enjoyed a “menu del dia” on a terrace with our guide, Leyre.

Our last stop was La Ciudad Encantada. Here we took a short hike through a geological site full of interesting rock formations.

Today we visited El Rastro, an open air flea market in the neighborhood La Latina. Here you can find thousands of stands selling a wide variety of items, both new and used. Students had fun exploring and finding treasures to bring back home with them.

Before heading back to the residency, we stopped to check out the Tabacalera. This old tobacco factory has been converted into a visual arts center that holds an array of street art, shows, classes, etc.

Now it’s time to relax as we have another busy week ahead!
