Make Germany’s vibrant capital your launching pad for valuable professional experience.

Jump into the bustle of Germany’s capital city, home to nearly 3.5 million people, a happening music and art scene, and a multitude of museums, festivals, and historical landmarks. Live and work in Berlin, spending three days a week gaining valuable experience at a professional internship. You’ll also study professional development and intercultural context through CIEE classes plus a range of interesting cultural activities.

Take in the vibrant energy of Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, brimming with sidewalk cafés, colorful shops, street festivals, and cultural activity. Outside of work, you’ll experience the everyday life of a real Berliner, practicing your conversational German and learning about the rich culture of the city. Walk the last remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall, pay your respects at the Holocaust Memorial, visit the five internationally known museums of Museum Island, or sit quietly in one of the city’s many parks.

Every day in Berlin you’ll be surrounded by larger-than-life history and architecture, while exploring life among fellow international students, incredible restaurants, and efficient public transportation. Day trips and overnight excursions to surrounding areas, included in your CIEE program, will guarantee this is an experience you’ll never forget.

A thriving global city known as Germany’s greenest.

Home to nearly 3.5 million people, the thriving global city of Berlin is a place of vigorous growth and change. Low living costs, excellent public transportation and services, and easy access to parks and green areas make it the perfect environment for students to live, study, and play abroad.

Countless small online businesses started here, and a number of industries continue to experience rapid growth – so whether you’re interested in communications, life sciences, environmental services, media and music, or business, Berlin’s the place for you!

Consistently ranked among the top of global cities in quality-of-life indices, Berlin is Germany’s greenest city. In fact, more than 44% of Berlin is made up of parks, woods, recreational areas, and other public spaces. Fun fact: This historic city also features more bridges than Venice!

Prior to departing for Germany, you will take part in an online webinar to go over program expectations, rules and details, and connect with others in the group. Once you arrive in Berlin, you will receive an on-site city orientation with other interns in the program. This may feature a tour of the neighborhood, where to shop for food, tips on affordable living, an introduction to the transit system, language crash courses, and even cooking classes that take advantage of the best local fare.

What People are Saying

  • “I think it is truly a win-win situation because it helps organizations like ours to have support and we can also, in turn, have a valuable impact on the student. They test their professional wings in a very safe place and really get to learn about real-world experiences. Thank you so much!”

    Former internship employer
  • “I cannot stress enough how rewarding it has been for me to network with so many different people. I found that being myself and being open-minded is one of the best ways for me to begin building a relationship, even with people you may think you have nothing in common with. I am learning to be loyal to myself for who I am and use adaptability to learn new perspectives.”

Hannah H., CIEE Gap Year Abroad alumna
  • “Taking a gap year was the best decision that I could have made before heading off to college. I have come out a more mature, open-minded, culturally aware, and ultimately happier person. I entered college with a sense of accomplishment for already having spent a year in transition and I find that it is already paying off both socially and academically. If anyone is considering taking a gap year, the answer should be yes!”

Kira F., CIEE Gap Year Abroad alumna
  • “I think the program is a fantastic opportunity for people who aren't quite sure how to break into their respective industries. This is especially true for people who feel that the best place to gain experience is nowhere close to home. In terms of placement, housing, and my visa, I couldn't have asked for more.”

    Emily M., CIEE Intern alumna
