Improve your French while discovering the unique traditions and breathtaking landscapes of Brittany

Immerse yourself in the medieval flavor, idyllic setting, and rich culture of Rennes, the capital of Brittany. Here, you'll have the unique opportunity to experience life as a Breton while polishing your French language skills through our committed approach to linguistics. Improve your French while discovering the historical culture and broad heritage of Brittany.

After morning language classes, spend the afternoon either participating on a CIEE cultural activity or take some time for yourself to check items off your bucket list. Rennes offers an incredible array of interesting activities whatever your interests may be.

CIEE Gap Year Abroad programs are focused on supporting participants in acquiring knowledge and developing skills to live in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. In addition to developing your language skills and gaining a better understanding of the local culture, you will take part in our Global Competence Course. This online course will allow you to connect and collaborate in real-time with our entire cohort of Gap participants worldwide, through interactive workshops and discussions. Reflect on your own cultural biases, share insights about your experience and learn about topics ranging from cultural identity and leadership styles to how to work and live sustainably or develop communication skills.

Full immersion means you’ll also have daily opportunities to practice French with your homestay as you prepare and share meals, shop at farmers markets, and learn local customs. There’s also plenty of free time to hang out with new friends, grab a coffee and plate of galettes or crêpes, and take in the sights and sounds of an authentic provincial city. Make the most of this amazing opportunity!

Experience a real France, off the well-worn tourist track.

Named France’s "most livable city,” it’s a gem in the French Northwest – a scenic region of medieval villages, rugged beaches, and dramatic natural landscapes.

The one-time capital of Brittany and today a leading center for digital innovation, Rennes is a blend of the quaint and the cutting edge. Here you’ll deepen your understanding of French amid centuries-old traditions juxtaposed with the vibrant cultural scene driven by the city’s young – and student-friendly – population. Home to the French punk scene in the ’80s, Rennes has a long roster of festivals – music, cinema, and now gaming – and no shortage of things to do year-round.

No visit to Rennes is complete without trying the galette-saucisse, a combination sausage roll/pancake. The city also holds one of the most important food markets in France, featuring  a full range local Breton specialties. Bring your appetites and get ready to explore!
