Find inspiration and real-world solutions, working with STEM professionals in the rainforest and out in the field.

Ready to put science into action? Here’s your chance to collaborate with like-minded young women on some of today’s most critical challenges: climate change, food security, and the protection of water resources and biodiversity. With scientists and experts as your mentors and guides, you’ll learn first-hand how women in STEM can make a difference, for the better.

First you’ll create your own research or engineering project, picking from topics such as: food waste, “pig poo” and biogas; data modeling and shrinking carbon footprints; farm production and biodiversity; and impacts of cattle production on forest conservation.

Next, you’ll put your problem-solving skills to the test! Design your own tiny houses or rainwater harvesting systems. Research innovative solutions to reforestation. Do your own carbon accounting and data modeling. Or devise an innovation that provides a creative solution of your own.

CIEE Gap Year Abroad programs are focused on supporting participants in acquiring knowledge and developing skills to live in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. In addition to career exploration activities and experiences and gaining a better understanding of the local culture, you will take part in our Global Competence Course. This online course will allow you to connect and collaborate in real-time with our entire cohort of Gap participants worldwide, through interactive workshops and discussions. Reflect on your own cultural biases, share insights about your experience and learn about topics ranging from cultural identity and leadership styles to how to work and live sustainably or develop communication skills.

Additionally, all Career Exploration participants will take part in the Professional Development Workshop facilitated by CIEE experts focused on business culture and supporting the development of professional skills. This interactive workshop will allow students to connect on a weekly basis across all Career Exploration sites. Each week will bring with it a new theme, covering topics like goal setting, how to build an entrepreneurial mindset and best practices for expanding your business and professional network. Regardless of which academic and professional path you choose, this workshop will be relevant and helpful in developing real world skills and competence!

Be on the forefront of sustainability in the greenest place on earth.

Why do biologists from around the globe come to this tiny Central American country? Because it’s one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Covering just 0.03% of the world's surface, it’s teeming with over 10,000 different types of tropical plants and animals – representing roughly 5% of the total species worldwide.

Did you know? Costa Rica is a leader in sustainable living and nearly all of its energy is renewable. What’s more, it is the only country to set the goal to be carbon neutral by 2025. Over the past 25 years, Costa Rica has doubled its forest cover – while still building a healthy economy. The country continues to innovate with sustainable agriculture, energy production, reforestation efforts, biodiversity and ocean resources protection. Ecotourism is a major economic driver and a win-win for all involved.

This small country —roughly the size of West Virginia — has a wealth of geographical features, from rugged mountains and volcanoes to both dry and lush forests with different microclimates. Along the warm Pacific coastline, you will see some of the most spectacular sunsets in your life

A succesful Gap Career Exploration achieves the right balance between hands-on learning opportunities, structured moments of instruction that can put your experience in context, and cultural activities or excursions that fully immerse you in the local culture.

All our programs begin with a week-long training session to help you:

  • Get familiar with the local business landscape and research your host organization
  • Articulate objectives for your internship, job shadow and/or volunteer experience
  • Set a work plan into place

For the following 4 weeks, you will be splitting your time between a career exploration experience (from 15 to 20 hours a week), cultural activities and professional development workshops. You'll also get to join our Global Competence course that will connect you with our entire cohort of gap students worldwide.

On your last week, you will meet our team back at the CIEE Global Institute to debrief your career exploration experience and set your own professional goals.

Weekends are for group excursions (two per 6-week block) or personal travel and exploration.
