Let your learning run wild in the Costa Rican Cloud Forest

Welcome to the jungle! From your home base at CIEE's Global Institute in Monteverde - our eco-friendly campus nestled next to the cloud forest - explore careers, practical applications, and training for future professions in the field of climate change mitigation.

Live in a rural community, surrounded by forests, farms, and amazing wildife. Network with local activists and professionals to discuss the impact of climate change in the region and learn about effective mitigation strategies. Observe and experience firsthand, progressive community initiatives that strive to balance the three legs of the "sustainability stool" - the economy, the environment, and society - while implementing local solutions for limiting greenhouse gas emissions. By the end of this program, you'll be able to visualize concrete solutions in an original project of your own design, and envision what a career path could look like for you in that field.

CIEE Gap Year Abroad programs are focused on supporting participants in acquiring knowledge and developing skills to live in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. In addition to career exploration activities and experiences and gaining a better understanding of the local culture, you will take part in our Global Competence Course. This online course will allow you to connect and collaborate in real-time with our entire cohort of Gap participants worldwide, through interactive workshops and discussions. Reflect on your own cultural biases, share insights about your experience and learn about topics ranging from cultural identity and leadership styles to how to work and live sustainably or develop communication skills.

Additionally, all Career Exploration participants will take part in the Professional Development Workshop facilitated by CIEE experts focused on business culture and supporting the development of professional skills. This interactive workshop will allow students to connect on a weekly basis across all Career Exploration sites. Each week will bring with it a new theme, covering topics like goal setting, how to build an entrepreneurial mindset and best practices for expanding your business and professional network. Regardless of which academic and professional path you choose, this workshop will be relevant and helpful in developing real world skills and competence!

Explore science and sustainability among the natural wonders of Costa Rica

You have to see this site to believe it. Set right next to the world-famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, CIEE’s new Global Institute is an amazing 150-acre campus complete with a working organic farm, open-air classroom and multiple science labs. Dorms are bungalow style and the sustainable dining hall serves fresh produce straight from the farm. Although you’d never need to leave this eco-friendly preserve, there’s much to explore on excursions and adventures planned to round out your experience.

Set more than 4,500 ft. above sea level, Monteverde (or “Green Mountain”) finds itself enveloped with fog and clouds year-round. The moisture trickles from tree branches down to the organisms below, helping to sustain an amazingly rich ecosystem. With 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and 2,500 varieties of plants, it’s no wonder National Geographic called this “the jewel in the crown of cloud forests.”

Far below the mountains are small coastal towns offering pristine beaches, basic shops and restaurants, and tidal shores ripe for exploration.

Did you know?
Costa Rica is the happiest and most sustainable country on Earth, according to the World Economic Forum. The country generates nearly all its electricity renewably and plans to be carbon neutral by 2021.
