Eligibility and Election

The ACB consists of 13 members, plus one ex officio member who also sits on the CIEE governing board, and one board observer from CIEE’s School of Record. Members serve four-year terms with a limit of two consecutive terms.


Nominations for open ACB seats are called for with a formal announcement sent by email to CIEE Academic Consortium-member institutions, usually at the beginning of each year. Candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by colleagues. The nominations committee reviews all nominations carefully and, when necessary, contacts candidates to learn more about their interests and background or to discuss potential conflicts of interest.

The nominations committee decides on a final list of candidates and presents the slate to the full ACB. Elections usually are held at the spring ACB meeting, and new members are elected by vote of the full ACB. CIEE staff members do not participate in the voting process.

When new members are elected, they are presented to the voting representative at each CIEE Academic Consortium institution to be ratified.


The ACB nominations committee includes the four members of the ACB executive committee – the chair, vice chair for member relations, vice chair for program development, and the evaluations coordinator.  The vice chair for member relations leads the committee meetings and presents candidates to the full ACB. This committee leads recruiting efforts for potential candidates and reviews their qualifications.


Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to international education and exchange and an understanding of the management of international programs. They also must be in a position to influence internationalization efforts at their institutions. The nominating committee considers a candidate’s type of institution, geographic location, cultural backgrounds and perspective, to maintain diversity on the board. Candidates also must be willing to donate time and energy.

Candidates also should:

  • Hold a senior study abroad-related leadership role at a CIEE Academic Consortium member institution in the United States.
  • Have a minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in U.S. higher education and study abroad
  • Be able to demonstrate service to U.S. study abroad through presentations at recognized International Education conferences (CIEE, NAFSA, Forum EA, AIEA, etc.) and participation in national or regional committees
  • Be familiar with current trends in U.S. higher education and the academic and co-curricular demands of current U.S. students
  • Be familiar with current trends and issues in studying abroad
  • Have a strong academic background


The work of the ACB involves shaping the strategic direction of CIEE and its investments in major program development projects and operations. As such, CIEE and the ACB have identified a need to create and implement a transparent and consistent conflict of interest policy for employees, executives, and members of the ACB. This policy helps prevent actual or potential appearance of a conflict of interest.

Potential conflicts of interest are evaluated before candidates enter the election process. All nominees are asked to share relevant information with the ACB nominations committee by disclosing current involvement with study abroad-related advisory boards and committees, and specific roles and responsibilities with each board or committee.

While there is no formula for what constitutes a conflict of interest or the appearance of one, each candidate’s self-disclosure will be reviewed by a committee that includes the ACB executive committee and CIEE Study Abroad executive staff. ACB members will conduct additional discussions if necessary.

CIEE and the ACB recognize the collegiality of the study abroad field and the complex nature of professional service, noting that conflicts of interest must be evaluated for each candidate. The presence of a conflict of interest is made based on a candidate’s individual profile, not on the profile of the candidate’s institution or organization.
