College First Year Abroad in Monteverde

Post written by Ambassador Abroad, Samantha, who participated in our College First Year Abroad Program in Costa Rica for a Academic Semester!

Go the extra mile! Apply for CIEE — travel, learn, grow, and experience.
It’s worth it. I’ve only been in Costa Rica for a week, and already this place has shifted the way I see life, growth, and what it truly means to live. Every sunrise here feels like a new beginning, full of possibility, challenge, and gratitude.

My Story

A year ago, I never imagined I’d be taking college courses in the mountains of Costa Rica. But after graduating high school early, I decided to take a leap of faith. I joined CIEE’s First Year Abroad program in Monteverde, and it’s already transforming how I see the world and myself.

Back home, I often felt like I didn’t quite fit in. I was focused and motivated but constantly searching for something more — something that would push me out of my comfort zone and show me what I was capable of. I wanted to see the world, to learn by doing, and to meet people who shared my curiosity and drive.

Here in Monteverde, surrounded by cloud forests, breathtaking views, and classmates from around the world, I’ve finally found that sense of belonging I was looking for. Every day brings a new challenge, whether it’s navigating a steep trail, practicing Spanish in town, or engaging in deep classroom discussions about sustainability and culture.

Finding My Way

Each morning begins with birdsong and mist rolling over the mountains. My classes are challenging in the best way — connecting what we study to the world right outside our classroom. I’ve learned to manage my time better, balance school and adventure, and make space for reflection. Even simple moments, like journaling after class or sharing coffee with friends, remind me to slow down and appreciate where I am.

But the greatest lessons come from connection. The people I’ve met here truly understand me. We share laughter, long hikes, late-night talks, and dreams that stretch beyond borders. For the first time, I feel part of something much bigger than myself.

Be That 2% — Study Abroad

These months in Monteverde aren’t just about earning college credits — they’re about growth, courage, and discovery. I used to think I had miles to go before I’d find myself. But now I realize every one of those miles has led me right here — to me.
