What you need to know

The program details

As a global intern in New York, you’ll work in a non-paying position within a wide range of opportunities across a diverse set of innovative industries. Co-curricular excursions and cultural activities in and around New York complement your coursework and immerse you in the history and culture of the city.

This 8-week program includes a full-time internship and an integrated academic seminar.

    Students participate in an eight-week CIEE full-time internship and academic seminar taught in an online learning environment, complemented by a number of on-site curricular activities, such as site visits, workshops, and guest lectures. Classes, co-curricular excursions, and/or work hours may be scheduled Monday-Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city when classes are in session.


    Students will be assessed via assignments and activities related to the academic seminar, including but not limited to: online discussion forums, small group peer coaching, reflective papers, individual or group presentations, analysis of readings, an informational interview and internship work plan, and feedback from internship supervisor. Internship supervisors and students each provide written evaluations of progress towards goals.


    Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship project and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by CIEE and the host organizations. The weekly seminar is designed to prepare students for leadership in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse workforce.



    Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5.

    Rising sophomore standing and above required at time of participation.

  • Visa Considerations

    Additional visa restrictions may apply and CIEE will advise students as part of the early application process. International students traveling to the USA on a J-1 Intern Visa* are encouraged to apply early to the program, prior to the application deadline, to allow for ample visa processing time.

    *International students traveling to the USA for the Global Internship Program must be eligible for a J-1 Intern Visa. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a degree program or recently graduated within 12 months of the program start date. International students currently matriculated at a US institution of higher education should consult with their home institution about activating CPT or OPT on their F-1 Student Visa.

Total credit: 6 U.S. semester/9 quarter credits

Internship: 6 U.S. semester/9 quarter credits; 30 integrated academic seminar hours, 200-240 internship placement hours

Language of Instruction

Students participate in an academic seminar taught in an online learning environment alongside the eight-week, full-time internship and weekly co-curricular workshops, site visits, and lectures. Participation in the integrated academic seminar and co-curriculars is mandatory for all participants.

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel insurance with benefits.

Students are responsible and manage costs related to travel, meals, books, and personal expenses. Below are estimates for consideration.

Financial Aid

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.

This breakdown has been prepared from the program budget for the purpose of calculating eligibility for financial aid. During the course of program operations, actual figures may vary. It should not, therefore, be used as a basis for calculation of refunds. CIEE reserves the right to adjust fees at any time.

Students required to study on CIEE programs through a School of Record will be charged a $500 administrative fee in addition to the Program Fees listed.

International students participating in this CIEE program who are not currently enrolled at a US university will be charged this fee for all services, including insurance, related to the J1 intern visa.
