Located in southern Taiwan, Tainan, is one of the island’s oldest cities and historical capital. Originating as a Dutch trading post, and with a city landscape shaped by Japanese colonial government planners, Tainan is now a bustling hub of commerce and manufacturing. The food choices are limitless at the city’s famous night markets. It is also a center for Chinese arts and history, with more than a thousand cultural sites, which draw crowds during frequent festivals. With sea and mountains nearby, Tainan offers a lot of opportunities to explore the outdoors and Chinese cultural immersion.

Language Tutoring. To ensure progress in fluency, each student is paired with a CIEE instructor for one-on-one tutorials. Tutors practice conversation and will guidie students with homework.

What you need to know

The program details

CIEE’s Intensive Chinese Language program is designed to help students improve fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese through intensive language training. Students can also take one or two courses instructed in English to enrich their understanding of China’s capital city. Students agree to speak Chinese to encourage language and cultural acquisition. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering.

    Classes are capped at 15 to ensure individual attention and participation. Students take a Readings in Chinese and Spoken Chinese course at the appropriate level. Readings in Chinese consists of five, two-hour Chinese classes per week. Each textbook lesson is broken into five components. Each textbook includes 10 to 12 lessons, completed in eight weeks. Spoken Chinese consists of five, two-hour Chinese lessons per week. Each textbook includes 12 lessons, completed in eight weeks.


    Grades are based on exams, homework, quizzes, attendance, and participation.


    Students are expected to work independently and diligently. The pace is fast, and students are expected to prepare for each class with at least four to five hours of work.



    Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5.

Program Fees

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel insurance with benefits.

Students are responsible and manage costs related to travel, meals, books, and personal expenses. Below are estimates for consideration.

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.
