    Hostels: students are housed in hostel double rooms with another CIEE student on the program. 


    Meals are not included but students can prepare their own food in fully equipped shared kitchens in the hostel.

    Located on the Uppsala University campus, the oldest university in Scandinavia. It boasts an enrollment of approximately 40,000 students and 15 site libraries.

What you need to know

The program details

Local faculty from Uppsala University teach our CIEE courses. Classes will be held at CIEE, on the Uppsala University campus’ premises.

    Students will take classes only with other CIEE study abroad students.


    The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of class participation, homework, individual project work, presentations, and midterm/final examinations.


    Classes are typically held daily Monday-Friday and include a combination of lectures, group discussions, local field trips, and student presentations.


  • Eligibility

Program Credit

  • Total credit: 3-4 semester/4.5-6 quarter hours per session.
  • Content courses: credit: 3 semester/4.5 quarter hours, contact hours: 45.
  • Optional Communicative Swedish Language course during one session: 1 semester/1.5 quarter hours, contact hours: 15.

Students enroll in one culture course and may also take an optional Communicative Swedish Language course.

While this program is not focused on language development, students interested in developing basic Swedish language skills may participate in an optional Communicative Swedish language course during one of the sessions. This course includes 15 contact hours for an additional 1 semester / 1.5 quarter hours.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, ask your college or university study abroad advisor if your school charges additional fees for study abroad.

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel insurance with benefits.

Participation Confirmation = $300 *

Educational Costs = $2,703 **

Housing = $680

Insurance = $167

Total Fees = $3,850

Students are responsible and manage costs related to travel, meals, books, and personal expenses. Below are estimates for consideration.

Meals not included in program fee = $500

International Airfare = $1,650

Local Transportation = $75

Books & Supplies = $100

Personal expenses = $500

Total Estimated Costs = $2,825

Financial Aid

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $5 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, MSI grants, Gilman matching grants, and Pell matching grants.

It should not, therefore, be used as a basis for calculation of refunds. CIEE reserves the right to adjust fees at any time.

Students required to study on CIEE programs through a School of Record will be charged a $500 administrative fee in addition to the Program Fees listed.
