Academics

Academics

Combining theory and hands-on practice, this program is designed for students considering a career in communications. Students can take courses offered by CIEE; Cursos Concertados with international students at the Universidad de Sevilla; or direct matriculation courses with Spanish students at the Universidad de Sevilla, the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, or EUSA School of Communications. Along the way, students learn about Spanish culture with a range of projects and activities. Great emphasis is placed on helping students explore their host community with a greater sense of purpose and reciprocity in their exchanges.

EUSA School of Communications is a prestigious, private institution offering courses that are academically accredited by the Universidad de Sevilla. Classes on the tools, theory, and history of media are taught by local media professionals.

Universidad de Sevilla has been one of Spain’s leading institutions of higher learning since the 16th century. It hosts 75,000 students and its many schools, departments, and institutes serve the educational needs of Spain’s most populous region.

Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO) is the second-largest state university in Seville and hosts some 11,000 students. Its 345-acre campus is 30 minutes from the center of the city. UPO offers undergraduate and graduate programs in traditional majors, as well as other areas, from biotechnology to translation. Modern facilities include campus-wide internet access, sports facilities, science labs, and more.

CIEE Seville is located in a beautifully renovated palace, built in 1725. It is close to the Royal Alcazar palace, and a 10-minute walk from the Universidad de Sevilla. The site includes classrooms, a computer room, student services, the Language Resource Center, and the Liberal Arts team.

Note for students taking courses directly from Host Institution(s): Students are required to stay in Seville until they have completed their exams. Official host institutions’ fall exams are in January, and official host institutions’ spring exams are in June. However, early exams in December and May may be possible, and they should be confirmed on an individual basis with the professor at the start of the regular semester session, during the add/drop period. Please note that it is up to the discretion of each professor to allow the taking of final exams before the start of the official examination period. As it is impossible to confirm your exam schedule prior to your arrival, if your priority is to leave Seville as soon as your university finals are finished, please book an airline ticket with a low change fee or a flexible departure date.

Language placement – Prior to departure for Seville, all students take an online placement exam. Results determine appropriate placement in language courses. Placement in many upper-level courses depends on a high score.

Language support – Our Language Resource Center is staffed by language professors and Spanish students majoring in Spanish philology, who help students with reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking. Tutorials on university course content are also offered. Students agree to speak only Spanish to encourage language and cultural acquisition.

Internship Placement – Participate in our “Internship Fair” and practice your interview skills. Placement is determined by language ability, job skills, and background. Because Spanish firms make final selections, internships in a particular company are not guaranteed. Students have interned for organizations like Marketing Publicidad, Simetrycal, Mail Boxes, CLIC, CyO Arquitectos as well as smaller firms and companies.

Students agree to speak only Spanish to encourage language and cultural acquisition.

Academic Culture

Class attendance is mandatory, and students are expected to complete work and exams as scheduled. Students should be aware that academic and exam schedules may vary between academic institutions, and plan accordingly. During the fall semester, there is no extended vacation period. During the spring semester, there are two one-week breaks: Semana Santa (normally the week before Easter) and Feria de Abril (normally two weeks after Easter).

Class Format

CIEE classes and Cursos Concertados at the Universidad de Sevilla are scheduled Monday through Thursday and meet twice a week. Direct enrollment courses are scheduled Monday through Friday. CIEE classes are only open to CIEE students. The program’s core courses usually include students from the Universidad de Sevilla. Cursos Concertados are open to other international students. Direct enrollment university classes with Spanish and international students last until the end of the regular semester. Students should plan on staying at least a week longer in the fall and a month longer in the spring. Core and elective courses are taught by media professionals with experience in collaborative and experiential learning projects. Other courses are taught by faculty from the Universidad de Sevilla or the Universidad Pablo de Olavide. The program’s core courses: 'Digital Video Reporting in Context and Magazine Reporting in Context' are workshops that give students the possibility of exploring their new social and cultural environment as documentarists.

Grading

In CIEE and Cursos Concertados, students are graded on midterm and final projects, papers and/or examinations, course assignments, class participation, and attendance. In direct enrollment classes, professors give oral or written final exams and, sometimes, term papers. Numerical grades are given on a 100-point scale and converted to the U.S. scale.
