Overview

Situated on the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Town is a magical destination you can call home for one block – or up to three blocks – of your study abroad adventure through CIEE's Open Campus Block program.

Spend six weeks - or up to 18 - studying history, politics, literature, film, gender studies, communication, community health, international relations, STEM, and more in English at CIEE Cape Town. Between classes, you're encouraged to explore Cape Town's 72 khaki-colored beaches, eat your fill of braai (BBQ), participate in excursions organized by CIEE, and form connections in the University of Cape Town's vibrant student community, conveniently located in the quaint residential Rondebosch district, near shops, cafés, and restaurants galore.

BUILD YOUR STUDY ABROAD ADVENTURE

Designed for students who require a flexible study abroad experience, CIEE's Open Campus Block program was thoughtfully structured to be completely customizable. Select one, two, or three six-week blocks per term at any CIEE Open Campus Block location.

Your Destination

With a glorious climate and natural draws like Table Mountain and stunning beaches, it’s no wonder Cape Town is Africa’s number-one tourist destination. Day and night, this multicultural city offers much to do: water sports, mountaineering, nightclubs, and restaurants. As a microcosm of many African locations in transition, Cape Town illuminates the issues of joining the global economy while grappling with vast socioeconomic inequalities born during its colonial and apartheid heritage. CIEE Cape Town is conveniently located in the heart of the student suburb of Rondebosch, a short drive away from mountains, beaches, and vibrant local communities.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Cape Town.

The Culture

OTHER ACTIVITIES AND STUDY TOURS

  • Explore iconic sites like Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
  • Channel your inner chef at a fun Food Jam with fellow students.
  • Join local fans at a sports stadium to watch cricket or rugby.
  • See culture come to life with art on First Thursdays, theater, music, and other productions.
  • Visit local communities to experience daily life in marginalized townships.

Please note: This list of activities is based on past programs and subject to change at CIEE's discretion to both adapt to local circumstances and participant feedback. Our goal when revising itineraries is always to enhance your experience. Every activity is designed to provide you with a deep immersion in your topic, local culture and sights.

SERVICE LEARNING OR VOLUNTEERING

Academic Projects

Enrich your experience with one of these optional academic projects:

  • CIEE Directed Independent Research: Design and complete research that answers a question you’re curious about. 3 U.S. semester/4.5 quarter credits; 15 contact hours, 100-120 research hours
  • Service-learning: Combine course-based learning with practical experience that allows you to interact with Cape Town communities. Service learning requires 15 hours of class time + 90 hours of service at an arranged location. It is best combined with another class taught in the last timetable slot of the day (to allow students to meet all time requirements) or taken as part of the 3-block-opt-out (as the only course in one of 3 blocks). 3 U.S. semester/4.5 quarter credits; 15 contact hours, 90 service hours

Even if you don’t enroll in a service class, you can still volunteer in local community impact projects organized by the CIEE student life team.

Academics

Students enroll in one, two, or three six-week blocks, taking two courses during each block. This program gives students the flexibility to stay in Cape Town the entire time or spend other blocks at our Open Campus Block locations in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Dublin, Kyoto, London, Madrid, Monteverde, Paris, Rome, Santiago, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, and Yucatán.

Students may select one of seven academic tracks: Art and Architecture; Business; Communications, Journalism, and New Media; Global and Community Health; International Relations and Political Science; Language, Literature, and Culture; or STEM and Society.

Classes are held at CIEE Cape Town. The center includes classrooms, a lounge, Wi-Fi, and experienced staff that supports day-to-day life in Cape Town.

Our strong relationships with Cape Town’s most-respected universities and research institutions allow us to offer top-quality courses, taught by local faculty. A core group of CIEE faculty members serve as professors and coordinate academic projects, working with CIEE resident staff to arrange guest lectures, excursions, field trips, co-curricular activities, and more.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.

Academic Culture

Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Cape Town when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends in between blocks.

Class Format

Courses taught at the CIEE: Cape Town are typically for CIEE students only. Class activities are scheduled Monday-Friday and meet three times per week, and attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas. Some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and mid-term and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.

Course Information

Course Notes

  • Courses are listed below by block and track; course list subject to change. Courses are in English unless otherwise noted. “GI” denotes courses that are offered at multiple CIEE locations.
  • Use the Course Comparison Tools to compare classes offered across all Open Campus Block programs for each block:
  • Students studying for three blocks who wish to complete a lab course will be required to opt out of one course to remain within the program credit range.
  • Most courses are taught face-to-face and offered only for students at one location. CIEE offers some courses in a hybrid format, available to multiple program locations to increase course choices. A hybrid class is taught synchronously in a classroom in one location, and students in the program at other CIEE locations join live online. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE”, and the title will include the location of instruction. Regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential and intercultural learning for all.

Academic Projects

  • Each Academic Project (Service-Learning and Directed Independent Research) placement will be designed based on the student’s project learning goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements. The process is highly individualized and goal-oriented. Students enrolled in an Academic Project will receive additional academic support that informs and enhances the placement experience. Academic Project participants must be flexible, as placements and faculty mentors may vary.
  • Students applying for an Academic Project are required to submit additional materials during the course selection process.

Language Classes

  • Non-credit-bearing Afrikaans or isiXhosa language courses are available.
  • Students may add a non-credit “Survival isiXhosa” or “Survival Afrikaans” course to their course load during the on-site orientation.
