The Culture


  • Visit national museums and historical neighborhoods, attend concerts, and explore Rio’s rich and diverse culture.
  • Get familiar with the fascinating socio-political landscape of Rio and Brazil by meeting community and business leaders.
  • Take an experimental class in capoeira and learn about the history of this rich cultural expression of the African diaspora in Brazil.
  • Catch a soccer game at MaracanĂ£ stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums, and host to the 2017 FIFA cup.
  • Join faculty for visits to businesses and corporate headquarters and gain a deeper understanding of Rio’s economic diversity.


Volunteering.  Participate in community engagement activities such as teaching basketball in favelas, helping out at a small business, delivering donated goods, or working in a community garden.

    Student accommodations are within walking distance of CIEE, and close to commerce (restaurants, banks, grocery stores, etc.), as well as public transportation (subway and bus).


    Breakfast is provided. All other meals are the responsibility of the student.

What you need to know

The program details

Faculty are CIEE instructors or instructors from local universities. Courses are taught by local and CIEE faculty with postgraduate degrees (masters and doctorates) most of whom are instructors at PUC-Rio, ESPM, or other top Brazilian universities.

    All courses on this program are for CIEE students only.


    Assessment in CIEE courses is on a U.S. grading scale of A-F and students are graded on the basis of written and oral assignments and a final paper or examination.


    CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation.



    Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5.


Program Credit

  • Total credit, 3 semester/4.5 quarter hours
  • Contact hours: 45

Students are required to take Doing Business in Brazil.
