Head to the Paris of Latin America, where you’ll explore the culture, politics, and contemporary issues of Argentina while brushing up on your Spanish. And if that doesn’t keep you busy enough, you’ll also have opportunities to interact with Argentines, participate in clubs and interest groups, volunteer, and travel throughout the country.

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES

  • Visit an estancia (cattle ranch) and learn about dressage, gaucho skills, folk dances, and traditional foods in a historic town. You will have the opportunity to explore a more rural landscape and experience a distinct way of life as lived in the outskirts of the cosmopolitan capital.
  • Explore beyond Buenos Aires with an overnight excursion.

 

PROJECTS

  • Volunteering. Give back to the host community and practice your Spanish language skills with locals as you help out a community library or community center.
  • Peer-to-peer: Practice your Spanish with your Argentine peers as you talk about everything from school to Argentine idioms and cultural icons. Plus, take part in cultural groups to pursue your interests and make friends in the process.

  • HOUSING

    Homestays: Get a feel for daily life by living with an Argentine host family. Host options may be traditional and nontraditional, including nuclear families with young children, single professionals, young couples with no children, and older couples whose children visit but do not live at home.

  • MEALS

    Housing includes two meals per day: breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Host families and students arrange their own meal schedules.

What you need to know

The program details

This program is designed for students who want to take courses that focus on Latin American and Argentine culture, politics, and history. Students can take a one-credit Communicative Spanish Language class to gain basic communication skills and have a better intercultural experience on site. Students speak both English and Spanish during the program.

All CIEE courses are taught by professors with extensive academic and practical experience and expertise in the field. The academic content of the program is designed, managed, and delivered by CIEE at FLACSO.

  • CLASS FORMAT

    Classes are for CIEE students only.

  • GRADING

    Grades are based on a combination of attendance, participation, papers, presentations, and a final paper or exam.

  • ACADEMIC CULTURE

    Classes are typically scheduled during the mornings or afternoons, Monday through Thursday, with daily homework assignments and weekly quizzes. Most courses combine lectures with local field trips and excursions Tutorial support is also offered for students who want to improve their language skills.. Attendance is mandatory and incompletes are not accepted.

Eligibility

  • OVERALL GPA

    Students must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5.

Curriculum

Program Credit

  • Total credit: 3 – 4 semester/4.5 - 6 quarter credits per session (students choose to enroll in one, two, or three sessions)

Each session, students enroll in:

  • One required CIEE area studies elective course: 45 contact hours for 3 semester/4.5 quarter hours
  • An optional Communicative Spanish course (may be taken only once): 15 contact hours for 1 semester/1.5 quarter hours
