Your Destination

Have your pick of shops, vibrant neighborhoods, theaters, and cafes in “the Paris of South America”. The city earned its nickname thanks to its stately architecture and a steady influx of European immigrants, giving visitors glimpses of Europe through its architecture and neighborhood life. A vibrant port city, Buenos Aires is also the world’s leading Spanish language publishing center with a population of 13 million and the cultural intrigue found only in cities of this size and prestige.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Buenos Aires.

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES

Excursions and activities may include:

  • Enjoy traditional Argentinian food and learn the tango and folk dances.
  • Relax Buenos Aires-style at a festival, watch culture in motion with musicals, dance, and theatre performances, or experience the passion for soccer.
  • Join a group that shares your interest – art, sports, culture, community – and connect with Argentine students. You can also join weekly café gatherings to compare school, idioms, and more with Argentine peers while you practice Spanish.
  • Take advantage of nearby sites of interest to see how Argentines live outside the cosmopolitan capital and that provide participants with a broader understanding of the country.

What People are Saying

  • "Studying abroad increased by level of independency, comfortability with my own identity, and gave me a completely new perspective on the world. If someone is able to go financially I would 100000% recommend it."

    Michaela D., Clark University

  • "I felt so supported when I was away and from the very beginning process from home. The on site staff and online staff for the preparation were very willing to help with anything. I loved the structure of the home stay, field trips and classes at the local universities."

    Maeve D., Oberlin College

  • "The classes were unstructured and difficult to choose, but overall I really enjoyed my experience and the freedom it allowed to really integrate into Argentine life. I also love the new building!!"

Established in 1993, this program is for motivated students with high-proficiency Spanish language skills who desire a complete cultural and academic experience. It includes specialized CIEE courses and local university courses at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) -ranked #1 University in Latin America by Qs in 2022, Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA), and Universidad Nacional de Arte (UNA). All courses are taught in Spanish by highly qualified and field expert instructors.

Participants experience university life in Buenos Aires, known as the Paris of America for its beautiful architecture and vibrant urban dynamic, enrolling with free direct enrollment of courses in the field of study of their interest. Academic Culture

As Argentina is in the south of the equator in the southern hemisphere, the Fall semester roughly coincides with the U.S. academic year, from August to December and Spring runs from late February/early March to July.  The U.S. and Argentine educational systems have significant differences.  Argentine students follow specialized paths of study to gain expertise in one field.  Courses focus on more in-depth analysis of a given field study; hence students are expected to take great initiative and responsibility for learning and completing assignments.  Students must take all exams (mid-terms and finals) within the official dates of the program.

Class Format

While CIEE classes are mainly organized like those at most U.S. institutions, host university classes follow local academic customs and practices. Students should notice that in Argentina, each university has a particular class size, campus look and feel, and attracts students of different socio-demographic backgrounds. UBA classes meet for four to six hours a week, with class time divided between lectures and smaller discussion workshops; UCA classes range from four to six hours per week; and UNA classes size varies per department from small workshops to large seminar setting classes.

Grading

CIEE courses use the U.S. A-F grading scale. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Courses at UBA, UCA, and UNA are graded numerically on a scale of 1-10, which CIEE converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents. Most classes have written exams and occasionally a final oral exam, based on an extensive reading list and formal class lectures.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.
