Say sí to improving your Spanish in the Paris of Latin America! You’ll explore the culture, politics, and history of Argentina. You’ll take courses about Latin America and Spanish language, interact with locals, participate in clubs and interest groups, and do volunteer work. And you’ll travel outside of Buenos Aires and be able to explore Argentina on your own — and return home with an understanding of this colorful society and a wider Spanish vocabulary.

  • HOUSING

    Homestay: Experience real, day-to-day life in Buenos Aires by living with an Argentine host family. Host options may be traditional and nontraditional, including nuclear families with young children, single professionals, young couples with no children, and older couples whose children visit but do not live at home. The typical commute between homestays and CIEE Buenos Aires is 30-40 minutes on average by public transportation.

  • MEALS

    Homestay: local home family stays include two meals per day: breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Host families and students arrange their own meal schedules.

The program details

This program is designed for students who want to combine Spanish language with most area studies courses in English focusing in local culture, Latin American studies, and history.

CIEE Buenos Aires operates within la Facultad Latino Americana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) which sponsors Latin America’s largest and most prestigious postgraduate teaching and research program in the social sciences. FLACSO-Argentina was established in 1974, and its faculty is associated with the most well-respected local universities.

Students speak both Spanish and English during the program.

All CIEE Buenos Aires courses are taught by professors with extensive academic and practical experience and expertise in the field. The academic content of the program is designed, managed, and delivered by CIEE Buenos Aires.

Academics

  • CLASS FORMAT

    Classes are for CIEE students only.

  • GRADING

    Letter grades of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D, and F are given. Final grades in courses are based on a combination of attendance, participation, papers, presentations, and a final paper or exam.

  • ACADEMIC CULTURE

    Classes are typically scheduled during the mornings or afternoons, Monday through Thursday. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments, weekly quizzes, and several out-of-class activities. Attendance is mandatory and incompletes are not accepted.

  • OVERALL GPA

    Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5.

  • Program Requirements

    Language Requirement: Beginner I - Intermediate II Spanish level

  • Total credit, semester: 15-16 semester/22.5-24 quarter hours
  • Contact hours: 45; credit – 3 semester/4.5 quarter hours per course, unless otherwise noted in the syllabus.

Students take one language course and four area studies courses offered by CIEE Buenos Aires.
