Explore Nanjing, China

Nanjing was the seat of power for Imperial China for six dynasties and is remembered as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. With more than 50 colleges and universities and over 700,000 college students, Nanjing hosts the largest percentage of students – more than any other city in China.

Every CIEE semester program has frequent cultural excursions and a multi-day study tour uniquely designed to complement the program’s academics and enhance students’ cultural immersion. In Nanjing, past study tours and excursions have included:

  • Field trips to the Presidential Palace, where Chinese democracy was born, walks atop the city’s 600-year-old wall, and boat rides on beautiful Xuanwu Lake
  • Opportunities to learn outside the box and make Chinese dumplings, learn calligraphy and traditional painting, hold dragon boat races, or dine with Chinese families
  • Excursions to the Northwest to travel along The Silk Road and discover Buddhist relics
  • Learning about panda sanctuaries in Sichuan and hikes on Mt. Qingcheng, birthplace of Chinese Taoism
