FALL BLOCK II - GARDEN ROUTE

The Garden Route is a 300-kilometre (190 mile) stretch of the south-western coast of South Africa that extends to the Eastern Cape. It is called the Garden Route because of the ecologically diverse vegetation and numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. The region is one of South Africa’s most popular holiday destinations. The coastal drive along the Garden Route passes through indigenous forests and includes world-famous sites such as the Cango Caves, an extensive system of underground tunnels and chambers spanning over 4 km (2.5 mi), featuring cave paintings and artifacts that indicate that the caves were in use during the Middle and Later Stone Ages. We will visit a series of historic towns that provide insight into the nation’s history and booming tourist industry. These include Oudtshoorn, which was the heart of the world’s ostrich feather business at its height in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and Swellendam, a quaint inland town that serves as a microcosm for South Africa’s complex cultural, social and economic landscape.
