My First Few Days in the Land Down Under

If I had to describe my first few days here in three words it would be eventful, welcoming, and breathtaking. I have yet to encounter a rude Australian person (if they even exist), as everyone I’ve met has been nothing but friendly and talkative!

On my first day in Oz, I met with Wayne from CIEE and the other students in my program. And let me say, after spending just 5 hours with them, I immediately felt as ease and that I had already made three great friends here in Wollongong. Wayne was extremely welcoming and easy to talk to. I’m glad to know I can go to him with any problems I come across during my stay here.

That night, Wayne took us to the top of Mount Kiera, which overlooks the entire city of Wollongong. If I were to describe the view, beautiful would be an understatement. I was at a loss of words for how incredible everything looked and I’m so grateful I get to call this place home for the next four months.

The student leaders at my residence hall have also made the transition to UOW both effortless and exciting. I already feel very comfortable talking to any of them and I’m looking forward to the rest of my semester with these new friends of mine. They’ve organized so many orientation week activities that help us get to know the other residents and international students. I’ve already met people from Dubai, France, Egypt, Turkey, and Sweden, to name a few. One of my favorite activities was the scavenger hunt around Wollongong! It was really fun and helped me get familiar with the town. I also really enjoyed the trip to the Wollongong Botanic Garden, which is located right across from campus. Even though it is the winter season right now, it was still very lovely and green.

As I continue to get acquainted in Wollongong, I look forward to exploring as much of the city as possible.  But I also can’t wait to explore some other cities and their surroundings! Each day is going to bring something new and it’s really going to be an experience of a lifetime.

G’day!
