Varenyam Achal is an Associate Professor at East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai, China. He is also Assistant Director of The Global Institute for Urban and Regional Sustainability (GIURS) at ECNU. He is faculty in environmental engineering. He was Assistant Professor at Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) between 2011 and 2012. In 2010, he obtained International Young Scientist fellowship from CAS after completing his Ph.D. study in environmental biotechnology at the Thapar University, India. Dr. Achal has a very board interest in biomimetics based environmental sustainability; bioremediation of pollutants, biological based green building materials and ecological restoration of historical monuments.
He has published more than 40 SCI papers in journals of repute and several book chapters. He is recipient of the ASCE outstanding research paper award in 2010 and BioVision.Nxt award 2011 from Fondation pour l’Université de Lyon, France. For his contribution in science, he has been included in Who’s Who in the World 2013. Some of his original research has had a global impact on microbially induced calcite precipitation and attracted worldwide attention.
