Mariko Powers is from Santa Cruz, California, and has a passion for environment and wildlife issues, journalism, and international affairs. She participated in the CIEE Khon Kaen Development and Globalization program in Fall of 2011 and graduated from Occidental College in 2013, where she studied Diplomacy and World Affairs and Urban and Environmental Policy. In 2012 she interned with the United Nations Development Programme in New York, where she worked on the UN Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals. Mariko spent the past two years as the Membership, Young Professionals, and Student Programs Director of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council (LAWAC), where she helped organize speaking events with ambassadors and world leaders. As the High School Student Program Director, she facilitated public and private LA high school students’ participation at events and served as a liaison between schools, international student program organizations, LAWAC, and teachers. She is excited to be back in Thailand digging deeper into how development policy affects people's lives and the environment.
