CIEE Security Alert - Tokyo, Japan

All CIEE Tokyo students and staff report that they are safe, following landfall of Typhoon Faxai.

Typhoon Faxai, which made landfall early Monday morning in the coastal city of Chiba, brought heavy rain and winds of 120mph (194kmph), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Faxai then moved over Tokyo, reportedly paralyzing transport both via subway stations and local airports, which saw around 100 flights cancelled. Images show damages to buildings across the country, with fallen trees and construction causing significant damages to structures, along with reported power outages. Evacuation shelters were set up across Tokyo, including the city wards of Minato, Machida, Meguro and more; however, by Monday morning most of the evacuation orders across Tokyo had been cancelled.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with our participants to ensure their ongoing safety. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-40-STUDY.
